Sun! One in a Billion, written by Stacy McAnulty and illustrated by Stevie Lewis, is a picture book about space, featuring our Sun.

This is the August selection for the Children's Braille Book Club. These special print-Braille books enable sighted and blind parents and children to enjoy reading together, an important part of building literacy, even among pre-school-age children.

Volunteers age 10+ wearing masks at all times are welcome. Two shifts of no more than 12 volunteers will carefully collate Braille-embossed, translucent plastic pages and tactile graphics pages between printed pages while walking around a large work table, 6-feet apart; and then carefully check their work; plus learn why Braille is very important for literacy.

This project requires being in excellent health (and living with others who are also) and low, covid-19-risk behaviors during at least the 14 days in advance (i.e., July 16-30), repetitive hand motions, good fine motor skills, standing and walking around a work table (or sitting at a desk for checking), and careful attention to detail for all tasks, and like all PMD projects, participation for an entire project shift.

Volunteer labor (and donations) allow these special books to be purchased at the same price as print versions, which is important since book ownership enables children and parents to re-read favorites several hundred together, an important part of early literacy.

Regardless of whether one volunteers, anyone can help underwrite the cost of this special book by donating at https://www.facebook.com/donate/738736350209954 or via the Benevity project, or other methods listed at http://www.pmd.org/donate.phtml

This is a mask-wearing required, fragrance-free event, meaning that all participants must wear masks at all times and not wear perfume or cologne, or scented skin, hair, facial, or clothing/laundry products.

Limited, free, off-street parking is available by request when registering to volunteer, with preference given to the earliest requests, but driving to this project is a mixed blessing due to dense traffic.

To participate, sign up yourself for one shift by 7/23 at http://www.pmd.org/s/073020.htm

Incomplete submissions cannot be honored.

If this popular project reaches maximum capacity, then interested volunteers can join the backup list, since we anticipate (and promote) cancellations due to covid-19 infection and unexpected exposure/risks.

PMD policy requires individuals only sign up themselves (and may not sign up or reserve spaces for others). However, parents must sign up minors (youth ages 10-17), and an accompanying adult also registers individually and participates fully if the minor is less than 16 years old.

For volunteers age 10-17, a parent/guardian must agree to PMD's waiver/release and NBP's NDA electronically, and for volunteers younger than age 16, a parent/guardian must also register individually and participate fully with the minor.

After you sign-up successfully, you will immediately see a confirmation screen and receive a confirmation email message. Then a few days before this project, PMD will email specific PDF project details including directions to the project site by public transit and by car*, checklist on how to prepare, what to expect, background information, etc.

*Limited off-street parking is available for the first eight people who request it when they register. Since driving in Boston at this time of day is gridlocked, we strongly recommend taking public transit (assuming that it returns to full schedule in phase 3 reopenings) since it is underground and thus less susceptible to street traffic delays, or walking or bicycling to this site.

"If a blind child is taught braille skills with the same
sense of importance that is rightly attached to the teaching
of print skills to sighted children, he or she will grow up
able to read at speeds comparable to print readers, a life
skill of inestimable value."
--Joseph E. Sullivan, Founder of Duxbury Systems

Barefoot College works with children of the age bracket 6-14 years and adolescents teenagers. Our work is in the remotest of excluded communities in off-grid, offline, disconnected, inaccessible areas, where with Digital Night Schools we create the first generation of learners. In these tribal belts, literacy is severely poor but the need to speak on issues of gender, sustainability and rights is extremely crucial.

Barefoot College has gathered its own grassroots knowledge on how these subtle topics of holistic education can be contextualized for these regions. This process is assisted best with attractive storybooks which depend less on text and more on visuals, to convey the layers of these issues.

As such, we invite voluntary contributions to visual materials that can make its way into children's storybooks in gender, sustainability and rights. The more text independent we make such communications, the more we are able to create a world solution for dealing with these issues at the farthest corners of our planet.

G.R.E.A.T. (Gwinnett Reading Exchange & Art Transforms) Little Minds is a public art and awareness campaign designed to inspire the love of reading, provide access to early learning children’s books in areas where books are scarce, and encourage an appreciation for public art in Gwinnett County.

This unique opportunity is for Gwinnett County Citizens. We need stewards to adopt our book exchanges. The primary role of a G.R.E.A.T. Little Minds Steward is to care for the book exchange so that it becomes and continues a long life as a vital, engaging resource for the neighborhood or community. Stewards are the key local contacts for each book exchange. We encourage each Steward to keep the book exchange full at all times. This is done by welcoming participation, creating and maintaining a friendly place in and around the book exchange, and encouraging early learning for all ages. Book exchanges will be placed in areas fully accessible to the public.

Stewards can source their own books or receive donations from the Gwinnett Coalition. For more information, visit our website at https://www.gwinnettcoalition.org/great-little-minds/stewardship/
