Brilliant Detroit and the Center for Success have partnered to offer tutoring at five of Brilliant Detroit's sites. In light of the COVID-19 crisis, we have cancelled all in person tutoring and are now offering virtual tutoring. We offer tutoring virtually at 3:50pm, 4:50pm and 5:50pm Monday-Thursday. Please note that all Brilliant Detroit programs operate on Eastern Time. Each session lasts for 40 minutes. The school year session of Center for Success tutoring runs until May 27th. We will have a summer program as well which runs from July 5th to August 12th.The Center for Success has prepared activities for mentor-student pairs to use during the remote sessions. The content of the sessions is up to you and your student partner. Common activities include reading books, playing literacy games, engaging in a debate, and writing and acting out scenes. As long as you and your student are speaking, listening, reading, or writing, that's literacy!
Our students' ages range from 5-8 years old and they typically attend tutoring on alternating days, so we are asking our mentors to commit to Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday if possible. In order to participate in the program, one must first attend a virtual training session (1.5 hours) and pass a background check. We have also created a Mentoring for Equity training that all new volunteers must attend. This workshop serves as an introduction to the ways that history, privilege, and bias can impact our roles as mentors. We will create a brave space to discuss tough topics and to expand our understanding so that we can be better partners to our students and families.
You do not need to bring anything in particular to the training. We will provide you with a digital copy of our mentor handbook. After the training, you will receive an email from the Orsus group with a link to complete a background check. Please note that our ability to pair you up with a student on a certain day is based on student need.
If you have any questions, please email aperlman@brilliantdetroit.org

Every summer we reach more than 700 children with our Summer Reading Program which helps them maintain their reading skills and avoid declining competence known as the “summer slide”. Literacy is more important now then ever and our goal is to help our community in the best way we can.The Corbit-Calloway Memorial Library hosts an annual community fair called "MayFest in Odessa" on the first Saturday of every May. This event features outdoor crafters, vendors, food, games and prizes for kids. We also have live music, a petting zoo, wandering costumed characters, a gigantic book sale, and an exciting huge raffle. All proceeds benefit our annual Summer Reading Program. About 1000 people come throughout the day to enjoy our events.
An aspect which makes our fundraiser such a success is all the community volunteers who come and help that day. Local high school students, adults and community members all join us in our quest to raise funds for our Summer Reading Program.
Volunteer responsibilities include but are not limited to helping set up tents, tables, unload vendor cars, supervise game stations, sell tickets, sell books, sell food, break down tents and tables, cars, and break down kids games.
