Family Fun Fair sponsored by Fairfield County Early Childhood Association and aided by community partners is a FREE family event for families with children, birth to age 8 years. The goal of this event is to provide an opportunity for families to spend quality time together with their children and ALSO learn about what services are offered in our community for families. This is a win-win project, giving businesses, agencies and programs a chance to share an activity as they share what they have to offer for families.

At Woodrow Elementary, we host literacy night once a year, as an opportunity for families and educators to come together as one. Literacy is being able to read, write and have the ability to communicate your thoughts and ideas clearly, as well as understand the thoughts and ideas of others. Preparing our children for reading and learning is one of the most important things parents and educators can do.

The Reading Olympics Program is for 4th and 5th grade students at each Hanover County elementary school. At MES, nearly 200 students participate in this program and read from a list of 32 books from October until March. Each March, 14 teams of students compete in 3 competition rounds in which they are asked questions about each book and earn a point for each correct response. An award ceremony follows in the afternoon, and each student is recognized.
The RO program promotes teamwork and cooperation; but most importantly, it exposes students to various genres of books. Many students discover a book that they love and want to read similar stories.
The competition day could not happen without parent and community volunteers. They serve as moderators (ask the questions) and scorekeepers throughout each round of competition. We appreciate your support!

Nothing changes the trajectory of a life more powerfully than being able to read. Chapter One, a unique online reading support programme pairs struggling 5- to 8-year old readers with volunteers who are working professionals.

You can help a child facing disadvantage to learn to read - from your desk! Just 30 minutes a week, a phone and an internet connection is all it takes.

Last year in England, 40% of 11 year olds from low-income backgrounds left primary school unable to read to the expected standard. We are mobilising an army of online reading volunteers to help close that literacy gap.

We recruit volunteers from companies who want to offer this to their employees. Participating companies are asked to make a financial commitment to support each team of ten volunteers.

The event is in its 12th year of promoting and encouraging reading. This year we are focusing on our youth, to encourage them to read as well as write and/or illustrate their own books. With all the screen time our kids are experiencing, they are missing out on the importance of books. Yet we know the desire to write is within many of us, even our children and teens. We want to tap into that part of them.
