The Baby Book Bag project features bright yellow tote bags which are hand-stuffed by community volunteers; screen-printed with a special logo; filled with a child's first board book, literature outlining the importance of reading to babies from birth, and other materials; then distributed to new mothers at the Washington Hospital. Each year, the Literacy Council hands out more than 1,200 Baby Book Bags.
The Baby Book Bag program began in 1994 when then Executive Director Helen Crunick envisioned a need for a project which would help break the cycle of intergenerational illiteracy. By working with new mothers and instilling the importance of reading, the Literacy Council attempts to address the problem at its earliest stage. Over the past twenty years, the Literacy Council has distributed more than 20,000 Baby Book Bags to new mothers.
