Our adult students come from all over the worldVenezuela to Ukraine, Burma to Mexicoand a few are homegrown, too. They all have one thing in common: they want to learn to speak, read, or write English better.

Our tutors come from our community and they have varied backgrounds too! Lawyers, mechanics, nurses, educators of all kinds, stay-at-home parents, and more join together with patience and a commitment to making a difference to support students.

These two groups of people come together through the Literacy Council. We meet with the students to determine their English level and create their learning plan. We train our tutors and share resources and techniques for them to work well with students. Then, we match our learning pairs based on their schedules. The tutors are volunteers and the 1-on-1 tutoring is offered free of charge.

1. Become a supervisor to support our tutors as they teach! In this position, you get to lead the zoom class and watch the wonderful interaction between our students and our tutors.
2. Sign up to be a panelist! If you are interested in motivating our tutors and/or students, you can sign up to be a panelist to inspire our young ones.

A fun event for children, parents and the community, AV Play Day provides hands-on activities for children of every age. Our Box of Dreams program was established 25 years ago in San Antonio and we have since expanded our services across the state.

Each school supply kit contains the following items: colored pencils, crayons, notebook paper, spiral notebook, big eraser, glue stick, folders with pockets, folders with pockets and brads, a ruler, pencils, ballpoint pens in black and red, and a box of tissues.

Distribution usually lasts between 30-45 mins per school and we ask that you show up at least 10 minutes prior to get checked in with the front office. Overall, your time commitment per school is around 55-60 minutes.

We are looking for 4-6 volunteers per school and there are costume opportunities for those volunteers that enjoy being silly.

Opportunity Details

We are planning to have a fun event for families in the community. Tickets will be sold for attendees to enjoy an afternoon of games, food, and entertainment. We will showcase the raffle baskets the community generously donates. We will be having mini golf, inflatable slide, games, grafts, and more at this event.
