Use your leadership skills to help give kids in need the chance to read. Page Ahead board members are passionate about children's literacy. We are a governance board, which means we are responsible for setting a vision for Page Ahead and ensuring that our mission is fulfilled. We scan the horizon for new opportunities and act as ambassadors for Page Ahead in the community. Each Page Ahead board member serves on one of the following committees: Board Development, Audit and Finance, Donor Engagement, or Governance. Committees can consist of board as well as community members and there may be duties outside of regular meetings. Board meetings are the second Tuesday of each month from 4 - 5:30P and we alternate between in-person (downtown Seattle) and online meetings. The average monthly commitment is 4-6 hours.

We believe good governance is achieved when:
1. Page Ahead has sufficient resources to place new books in the hands of children in need, provide professional development for preschool teachers, conduct parent trainings and Story Times, and help our partners with their literacy programs. All board members make personal financial contributions to Page Ahead, and use our circle of influence to help with fundraising.
2. Page Ahead is a good steward of all contributions. We closely monitor the agency’s financial condition, and hire a firm to do an independent audit of Page Ahead’s financial statements annually.
3. There is strong leadership from the board. We actively recruit new members and look for people who have a passion for children and literacy that is matched by their determination and accountability to the agency and its members. We serve a population that is diverse ethnically, culturally and geographically and actively search for board members that represent the community.
4. There is strong linkage between the needs of the community and the program actions of our agency. We attend reading events and book fairs and communicate with partners, children and parents. The board actively works to establish and recognize their needs and acts as the link between the community and Page Ahead.

Board Term: 3 years, followed by voluntary annual renewals up to a total of six years.

Opportunity Details

*Scan, research, and sort books for Spread the Word Nevada's Amazon.com book store.
*Requirements: Ability to use a laptop computer; prior experience with Amazon's website is helpful
*Time Commitment: Minimum of two days per month, two hour shift
*Location: Spread the Word Nevada Warehouse

*Assist at one of our monthly family literacy programs.
*Requirements: Transportation and ability to lift 20-25 pounds
*Time commitment: One hour per month, early morning or afternoon availability
*Location: Elementary schools in Henderson, Las Vegas and North Las Vegas

*Partner with a child to help improve reading and language skills
*Requirements: Transportation, criminal background check and one-time training session
*Time commitment: Minimum of one hour per week
*Location: One of six elementary school campuses across the valley

*Assist with preparing donated books to be distributed to the children in our 47, adopted, at-risk
elementary schools in the Clark County School District.
*Requirements: At least eight years of age
*Time Commitment: Two hours per book preparation event
