Honduras Child Alliance provides educational enrichment and healthy living programs in the seaside village of El Porvenir and has operated there since 2009. Our community is welcoming and safe, but it is under-resourced and there is much work that can be done to improve access to education and healthcare, and general quality of life. For that reason, although long-term volunteers (6 weeks to 12 mos) provide staff for the educational programs, shorter-term (1-4 weeks) workgroups are always needed for special projects and events.

How do workgroups impact the community?

The most important aspect of your work is that it actually fulfills an otherwise unmet need in developing HCA classrooms, providing healthcare, improving facilities at public schools, or for a family in need. At Honduras Child Alliance, workgroups always have natural opportunities to connect with the local children and adults, even outside of volunteering. Group meals are regularly hosted in the homes of our neighbors, and sometimes our volunteers are housed in the guest house/hotel owned by a local family. This helps to support the local economy, as well as give volunteers a more connected experience. As your group becomes part of the community, even for just a week, you will find that in addition to your tangible project, you will also build genuine connections with the people who live in this hard-working and vibrant town.

Welcome to SpiritCorps, a volunteer-driven positive core values program serving seventh to tenth grade students from Maine to California. SpiritCorps is your opportunity to join a community of volunteers, tending to the spirit of our children through the profound power of story. Learn more about this wonderful volunteer opportunity at one of the 30-minute Discovery Sessions listed below.

Now in partnership with the Maine Department of Education, this acclaimed program is slated to serve 12,500 students statewide in the next two years. And, by decade’s end, 25,000 students annually are expected to meet the SpiritCorps challenge from coast to coast, assisted on their journey of self-discovery by 1,000 adult volunteer Story Coaches!

SpiritCorps begins with heartfelt video stories from program staff and friends, inspired by the lives of the historic heroes we celebrate in Spirit Series. This year, from the many virtues exemplified in the Series, schools can choose to explore Courage, Compassion, or Conscience. With guidance from their adult Story Coach volunteers, participating students complete a 5-Step self-discovery and writing process to identify, craft and record a true-life SpiritCorps video story of their own.

Story Coach volunteers mentor students with constructive written feedback at three critical points during the process. You don’t need to be the world’s greatest writer to Coach! Just a feel for good story and a commitment to advance the lives of the young people we serve. As an added benefit, and a crucial part of your training, Coaches will also go through the 5-Step process, from pitch to video story of your own! Once trained, we ask that you give 15-20 hours of your time, mentoring as many as 20 students during the school year. To learn more, watch this brief video (https://www.spiritseries.org/spiritcorps/) and make the SpiritCorps connection. Together We Grow!

You can volunteer from anywhere in the world: from Hoofddorp and Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Belgium, to Wetherby, UK, to Kornwestheim, Germany, to Maine, USA and anywhere in between. Join us in growing together!
