There’s a reading crisis in our country! Third graders who are not proficient in reading by year-end, are statistically slated for prison. That is evidenced in our prison population; the average reading level of a prison inmate is third grade. Further, a 2019 study revealed that 78% of Maryland’s Black 4th graders were not proficient in reading. That translates to 78% of Maryland’s Black fourth graders are statistically slated for prison! This is a crisis and presents a very clear Clarion Call to Action! We invite you to answer our Call to Action by supporting The Clarion Call “Read To Lead Campaign” designed to mitigate this crisis. We coach youth to reach grade-level reading proficiency, or better. The Read to Lead Campaign is an innovative reading program that utilizes technology and personal intervention. The program is flexible, scalable, and measurable. With you and others as a Learning Coach volunteer, we can reach hundreds, even thousands, of students and coach them towards reading proficiency. With three hours a week you could help save a child from a likely future of incarceration. Your time could make the difference between a path toward prison, and a path toward college.
Learning Coaches volunteer three hours per week (from home), in three one-hour scheduled sessions to coach their student to reading success. Teacher and tutor experience is NOT required, though welcomed. Learning Coaches participate in a Briefing, Orientation, and Training prior to working with students. Our Learning Portal contains all the information the Learning Coach will need to be effective in supporting their student's reading improvement.

More informationWrite a funny article (500-1200 words) for our magazine to tackle gender inequality through comedy! Use your storytelling skills and sense of humor as a catalyst for change!
At The Syndrome Mag we’re always looking for writers who want to help educate, enlighten, and promote gender equality through comedy and humorous story-telling.
Your article can include topics ranging from women’s rights to politics to everyday women’s experiences like how to put on a sports bra or why random people want to touch your belly even when you’re not pregnant.
Our magazine covers a broad list of topics from a feminist’s perspective, including those that directly address gender equality issues such as reproductive rights, pay equity, #MeToo, the glass ceiling, and women in politics (because we REALLY need to laugh about these things) and those that are lighter-hearted and focus on what it’s like being a woman in the world today, including sex and sexual identity, relationships, dating, body image, work, fashion, food, etc. Funny is who we are and what we’re looking for, no matter the topic.
What we are looking for:
• Article (500-1200 words)
• We accept first-person experiential essays, satirical takes on hot topics, and funny lists.
• Please note that we only accept completed articles, not concepts or treatments. We don’t accept previously published work; if something has been submitted other publishers, please let us know.
• The Syndrome Mag is committed to publishing the best work possible and that usually requires some edits. If you’re not comfortable with positive constructive criticism, we may not be the place for you. Our editors are truly nice people who know a lot about being funny and also less humorous things like where to put a semicolon and how to avoid redundancy
Time needed: 2 hours
Conditions: feminist writers, in English only, first-time essays welcome!
The nonprofit already has: An online magazine with a great following and active social media pages where we will promote your work

Become a mentor for children across the globe! This is an incredible way to give service online, especially since most of the world's schools are still closed due to COVId-19, and this is the only educational resource these kids will have. It’s super easy to get to started (go to Portal.villagebookbuilders.org and register), and it’s fun to get connected and help mentor these children. Once you are paired with a child, your sessions only take 30 minutes a week, and our fun interactive training sessions will help you be successful.
Education opens children’s minds to a world of possibilities and gives them the tools they need to dream bigger. And you can inspire that within them through mentoring!
Quote from fellow Nike Employees
This amazing experience just recently started and I am absolutely happy. Because it is not only about myself helping someone, it is about the gift I receive from the energy of the person I am teaching something. In my case, Dixon is a wonderful boy, he is curious and very intelligent, he loves Math and geography, so we speak about these themes in our sessions. I learn about Uganda with him, and I teach all what he asks to know. It's been a win-win experience. - Sara Gorozabel

When the mentor program was introduced to me, I had actively been searching for service opportunities. I was seeking prospects through multiple sources, including the company for which I had previously been working, but I hadn’t found anything fitting my needs yet. Village Book Builders was offered to me as an opportunity to help educate and serve those most in need and those willing to put forth their own efforts. I love serving through VBB because the program is able to work around my schedule and with my abilities to serve. I also love that this particular service focuses on education, something in which I believe strongly. Lastly, I love that VBB provides interaction with those we are serving; the children are vibrant and eager which makes it all the more rewarding. - Michael Muehlmann
Mentoring with VBB has been such a meaningful way for me to give back amidst my busy schedule! I have had such a great experience with my mentee and have loved watching him become a better reader, problem solver, and communicator. Seeing his growth over the past few months has been truly remarkable. Being an extra support system for him is such a joy and I am so thankful for VBB connecting the two of us! - Diandra Marizet
