BabyRead has two types of volunteer opportunities in Oconee County, South Carolina. The primary role is that of a Family Reader. Families with children from birth through the start of pre-K are assigned by our staff to a specific reader. These volunteer readers meet with their family twice a month in a public location, such as a local library. During these hour-long sessions, the reader interacts with the mom or caregiver demonstrating effective techniques for reading, singing nursery rhymes, and doing fingerplay activities with their baby. BabyRead targets low-income families who typically have few or no books in their home. These families usually do not understand the importance of reading to babies and the impact it has on a baby's brain development. In this early literacy outreach, family readers pave a path for these children to be prepared for school, which is a critical step towards success in life and breaking the cycle of generational poverty

BabyRead also has volunteers who assist with administrative activities such as fund raising, writing and distributing public awareness materials, and supporting miscellaneous tasks required for the organization's operations. BabyRead interviews all new volunteers, performs background checks, and provides training.

Skills
A desire to share a love of reading is the most important skill. While some of our volunteers have backgrounds in education, that is not a requirement. Some families in the area do not speak fluent English. For those families we would like more volunteer readers who are bi-lingual.

Interests
An interest in young children, books, and reading is key. Many of our volunteers are retired and are grandparents whose families may not be local. Being a volunteer reader gives them an opportunity to share their love of babies and toddlers.

The World Tour Reading Program invites volunteers to go in USA Elementary classrooms and read children's books portraying other cultures. We ship the books to the volunteer at their place of work and the volunteer donate the books to the classroom to contribute to the diversity in their libraries.

As we read in worldwide classrooms, we educate children about the different cultures that make up our global communities. They learn:
- to model respect for all life experiences
- to welcome and care for other cultures
- to celebrate, promote and appreciate our differences and similarities
