Our school is hosting a Buy One Get One (BOGO) FREE book fair right before summer break. Many of our students need essential reading skills. We are trying to get as many books into our students' hands before summer break to decrease the reading-level drop that usually occurs over the summer months. We are in need of volunteers to help out with the event.

Early education before a child reaches the age of five is vital for a child’s long term success. Being able to read is not only critical to a child’s education but, it is critical in life. A child who has access to books will read more, better and with enjoyment. United Way of Delaware’s My Very Own Library Delaware initiative encourages and supports students’ love of reading. Through My Very Own Library Delaware, students are given an opportunity to choose ten (10) brand new, free books to build their own home libraries. Currently, there are 14 elementary schools (statewide) participating in My Very Own Library Delaware. Limited resources prevent us from expanding this opportunity (and access to books) to reach other children in schools across Delaware and not presently part of My Very Own Library Delaware. Good news … you CAN make a difference! We invite you to partner with us on coordinating and implementing a local book drive to help local students get books. The books collected will be distributed by United Way of Delaware in schools across Delaware. By providing access to resources (books), each child will have a chance to not just succeed in his or her educational goals, but over the span of his or her lifetime.

Books have the power to benefit children in a myriad of ways. As a Reading Angel, reading to students is one of the most important things you can do to prepare them with a foundation for academic excellence. Why does it matter? Children who do not read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school as those who read proficiently. Help us improve our kid’s literacy scores and their reading capability. Commit to reading to students for one hour at a local school. We will help schedule a convenient time and place. You will help inspire a love of books in local children!

Ride for Reading volunteers gather once a month to deliver books via
bicycle to the students of various Title I schools. A Ride for Reading
representative talks to the children about the importance of literacy,
helmet wearing, and a healthy life as well as an introduction to the
different types of bicycles (commuter, cyclocross, mountain, road, fixie,
etc.)

The representative has the students take the RfR Pledge:
I promise to read my book twice.
I will never ever…
Ever, ever, ever…
Ever, ever
Throw my book away.
I will pass it on to a friend…
Family member…
Neighbor…
Classmate…
Or someone else I know.
And I promise…
To be the best student for the rest of the year
Then volunteers then place all of the donated books in a central location
similar to a book fair. Each child in the school gets to choose 1-3 books
that they take home with them. and promises to pass along the book to a
friend.
