Each year, Book'em gives 100,000+ books to underserved youth through partnerships with 180 schools and community organizations. The majority of these books are donated!

Book'em can use new and like-new children's books in great condition - from board books to chapter books (ages 0-18).

Many of the books Book'em receives are collected through book drives. From a book collection box set out at a lemonade stand, to a classroom project challenging classmates to bring in books from home, to a multi-office corporate competition, book drives come in all shapes and sizes. No matter what it looks like, it's a wonderful way for kids and adults alike to give back to the Nashville community.

Organize a book drive in conjunction with an event, holiday, or just for fun! It can be done with your office, school, place of worship, team, civic group, club, family, neighborhood, or anywhere else you may be involved. Check out our tips and resources on our website at https://bookem-kids.org/give-books/ but feel free to make it your own! The general guidelines we typically give can be found on our website, bookem-kids.org/give-books/. If you have any other questions about organizing a book drive, please email books@bookem-kids.org or give us a call at (615) 255-1820.

At Doorstep Library, we’re dedicated to bringing the magic of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of children who need our support.

With 1 in 4 children in the UK leaving primary school unable to read or write properly, we recruit and train in-person and online volunteers to introduce children from under-resourced areas to the pleasure of reading.

What’s Involved?
As a Doorstep Library reading volunteer, you’ll visit the same families via Zoom every week with eBooks to share with the children and encourage their love of reading.

You will:

• Join families via Zoom with your volunteer partner for 20-minute reading sessions
• Make notes after the session to keep track of how the child/ren are progressing

Our unique home-based approach allows our volunteers to build trusting relationships with families, helping them to connect with the community and equip them with the skills they need to succeed later in life.

When and Where?
You can be based anywhere in the UK to become a Doorstep Library online volunteer.

• Time commitment: One evening a week (Regular Volunteer), one evening every other week (Semi-Regular Volunteer) or once every 3 weeks (Stand-In Volunteer) during school term times

Imagine the best of two worlds: you read and discuss a popular science book -- and it counts as a volunteering to help Ukraine.

We look for people who can help to select STEM books for Ukrainian kids, negotiate copyrights for them, [help to] organize translation and publishing process. You can also look for sponsors, who want to put their names on the translated book.

Details are in the Benevity project "Publish STEM books and videos in Ukrainian". Below is the description for your convenience:

Talented Ukrainian teenage students are in peril. Currently, over 5 million of Ukraine’s 7.5 million students have been forced to relocate, with over 1 million becoming refugees abroad. Two years of the full scale invasion come right after the two years of COVID pandemics, when many kids missed out on the normal school process.

The war added a new, often overlooked aspect to the problem: an almost complete void in popular science books and videos in Ukrainian language. Until recently, Russian books and websites were widely available in Ukraine. Since the popular science market is relatively small and low-profit, it was completely dominated by books and videos in Russian.

As the war goes on, Ukrainian students, teachers and parents become more and more traumatized by anything related to the aggressor. They do not want to use the Russian language or books with Russian or Soviet symbols – not to mention the fact that the import of new books from Russia has stopped completely.

We risk losing an entire generation of kids who would grow up without food for their curiosity. Since the popular science books and videos are low-margin, we believe that nonprofit organizations like Nova Ukraine should come to the rescue. The cost to print a popular-science book or dub an hour-long video in Ukrainian is about $10,000. Subtitles for a video can be commissioned for less than $1,000.

Nova Ukraine plans to translate and publish several dozen books and videos on popular science (STEM, including psychology and biology) targeting children and young adults 10-17 years old who are not yet proficient in English. We already allocated $240,000 for this initiative and hope to raise much more.

We will serve not only the most gifted kids who compete in olympiads, but also the next tier, those who are potentially able to succeed in technical colleges. Our goals are to help them learn about genuine science while also strengthening their sense of community, including through common language and common reading backgrounds.

Since 2014 Nova Ukraine has funded a number of STEM classes, summer camps, vocational lectures and other activities where such children can interact. In 2023 we spent about $600,000 for such projects, and we aim to double our impact in 2024. Notably, our educational initiatives attracted support from esteemed donors, including Fields Medal winner Volodymyr Drinfeld.

You are warmly invited to join our cause as a donor or volunteer. Please, write to the user STEM at novaukraine.org
