OverviewUPchieve is a free, online platform that connects low-income students in the US with live, volunteer coaches (that’s you!) any time they need it. Our volunteer experience was designed to be ultra-flexible because we believe it should be easy for awesome people like you to help students succeed. Our text-based chat allows you to help students from anywhere with an internet connection: whether that be from your desk at work or from the comfort of your couch!
How You Can Help
As an academic coach, you’ll work directly with motivated students, 13+ who can’t afford private tutoring or admissions consulting and often don’t have anyone else they can turn to for help. All of our students attend Title 1 schools or live in low-income zip codes.
Steps:
1. Create a volunteer account at upchieve.org/volunteer
2. Complete UPchieve 101. This 30-60 minute training will help you feel confident when working with students.
3. Pass at least one quiz in any of our subjects! We provide review materials & encourage using Google.
4. Select when you want to be notified of student requests. UPchieve will text you when a student needs your help! No worries if you can't pick up every request! UPchieve notifies multiple volunteers when a student needs help.
5. Begin making an impact! Many students will go from confused to confident in the course of just one tutoring session. Those “aha” moments feel great!

Join us as we celebrate Diversity Through Literacy and distribute over 1,000 diverse books, including 500 copies of the NY Times best-seller, The ABCs of Black History across all five boroughs of NYC.Books hold tremendous power. Diversity in children’s literature is so important because it enables children to learn about themselves, develop a strong sense of identity, and understand that they have a valid place in society. In addition to seeing themselves represented in literature, books are a wonderful way for children to learn about people, communities, and cultures that are different from their own. LINC works at the intersection of education and community development to empower parents, caregivers and community members to create literacy-rich environments throughout their neighborhoods. Providing books that are reflective of each unique community, and relevant and meaningful to the children that live there, is one aspect of this holistic approach.
These distribution events will be held throughout the city in partnership with Fidelis Care.

The lack of quality learning experiences can limit a child’s future potential, especially those who are most vulnerable — the children of ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and poverty-level families already struggling to afford the basics. By providing early literacy opportunities, we can help promote academic readiness. And when children show up ready to learn, it sets up a solid foundation for future success in both school and life.By volunteering with United Way of Northern New Jersey as a Book Buddy, you can share your love of books and reading while making an impact in the lives of children throughout our region.
As a Book Buddy, you will record yourself reading a children's book. Recordings will then be made available to our nonprofit partners, local preschools, Head Start programs, family care providers, child care centers and ALICE families. Volunteers of all ages can participate.
