Community Education Partnerships (CEP) believes in providing quality education to students in the Bay Area who are unhoused and to those facing housing instability. As a consistent presence in the life of a houseless youth, you can help build up that child’s confidence and instill a joy for reading and math that will help set them up for academic success.

As a volunteer tutor with CEP you will:
-Work with a student for at least one hour per week
-Provide homework support and academic skill building
-Read aloud and be read to in return
-Have fun!

No teaching experience is required. Session times are flexible and all of the necessary training is provided. Students range from 2nd grade to 12th grade and are matched with tutors based on the tutor's age and grade preferences.

The closure of schools that began in the spring has served to only widen the educational gap between economically disadvantaged students and others. With school closures taking place for the foreseeable future it is imperative that we give economically disadvantaged students the attention they need to not fall behind.

Pandemicprofessors.org, a 501c3 organization, was founded in April by Berkeley alumni to achieve the mission of facilitating free online tutoring to low-income communities affected by the pandemic. It is a 100% volunteer-based organization. Our philosophy not only supports academic achievements, but also emphasizes the importance of socio-emotional health in these isolating times.

We currently serve over 115 underserved students with the help of 150 dedicated volunteer staff and tutors. With the significant demand that we are seeing, we want to be able to serve more families and communities in need. We need your help!

With the huge influx of students, we are asking people to volunteer with us.

Being an online tutor:

As a tutor, you are the lifeblood of this organization and are the one delivering services. You will interact with families and help the student perform and learn!

We are especially looking for coding tutors, as we have seen the benefits and need for under-resourced students to gain skills related to the tech industry.

Requirements:
-2 or more hours per week commitment (flexibility for job requirements, midterms and finals)
-Tutoring experience is helpful but not required. We offer training and support.

Benefits of joining Pandemic Professors:
-Improve diversity & inclusion in the tech industry by fostering hard skills and a sense of belonging in students from communities who are historically under-represented in tech.
-Learn by teaching! Teaching others is a great way to improve your own skills. Teach at many levels, from introductory coding in languages like Scratch to more advanced levels (e.g.,Python, Java)
-Flexible schedule: volunteer any day of the week, any time of day, wherever you are! We have volunteers from around the globe and students on many different time zones.
-Get recognized for your volunteer work with letters of recommendation for grad school; recognition on our website or social media; references for job applications; and more!

This is not only a way to help those in need and to benefit your personal resume, but also a way to build community. We are here to support each other through this time as well and hope you join us!

If you have any questions about our need for tech industry volunteers, please contact Alissa Stover, Director of Operations and UX/Service Research & Design, at alissa.stover@pandemicprofessors.org.

If you would like to contribute to the organization beyond volunteering (e.g. by way of partnership or in-kind donations), please contact Sara Ellis, Director of Program Services and Development sara.ellis@pandemicprofessors.org

Story Pirates is a renowned educational media company that brings together top comedians, musicians, designers, best-selling authors, and incredible teachers to amplify the words, ideas, and stories of kids on the world stage.

Currently, more than 15,000 kids send us their original stories each year, and it is fundamentally important to us that each author knows how much we value their effort. We can’t adapt every story we receive into a podcast, book, or piece of theater, but we are committed to ensuring that each story is read and receives a positive, personalized note in return. We call this process “Story Love,” and we rely on the time and generosity of volunteers to power this process. Volunteers' notes to our young authors have been printed and framed, shared in class, and read aloud at talent shows. A simple note can make a big difference!

STORY LOVE DIY is our rolling volunteer program that allows individuals to write notes for stories on their own time over the course of several days. The program begins with a brief kick-off teleconference with all participants to share instructions and answer questions. Participants then have five days to read pieces from incredible young authors all over the world and encourage them to keep writing amazing, original stories.

Become a mentor for children across the globe! This is an incredible way to give service online, especially since most of the world's schools are still closed due to COVId-19, and this is the only educational resource these kids will have.

It’s super easy to get to started (check out our website), and it’s fun to get connected and help mentor these children. Once you are paired with a child, your sessions only take 30 minutes a week, and our fun interactive training sessions will help you be successful.

Education opens children’s minds to a world of possibilities and gives them the tools they need to dream bigger. And you can inspire that within them through mentoring!
