We throw monthly sports and more camps at the gymnasium in Kunia Village. The number one goal is to give the kids we work with a sense of community through consistent engagement with our coaches, teachers, mentors, other volunteers, and with kids from other parts of the island. We work mostly with low income and homeless kids opening access to opportunities they otherwise would not have with the purpose to include all in society. We feel this is important for many reasons. Too many kids and people are left out for no real reason in a society that has such abundance. We feel it is important to take what is needed directly to where it is needed.

iNK Think Tank, Inc. founded in 2009, became a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) in 2015.

Our mission is to ignite the passion for learning in both teachers and students so that they can sustain it. We believe that a love of learning is inherent in every human being. It needs to be stimulated, nurtured and cultivated. Authors have this passion and it is contagious. We want to transform the culture in education from one driven by answering questions on a test to generating questions from students that drive them to study and learn.

Currently, our board consists of 3 authors, the president of a 20+ year old online nonprofit educational company, a publisher, and a literary agent. We need people who know the education marketplace and understand the difference that excellent reading materials can make. We are prepared to replace some the authors on our board with people who know business and can help us expand our reach.

Our success at this point is due to the following:
• Authors generate motivation and excitement at in-person school visits. But the residual effects of one exciting day in a school year are transient. We know how to bring this excitement to daily classroom work. When students are inspired and motivated, they do the work needed to learn.

• These top authors from science, social studies, history, and math disciplines, who write for children, know how to sift through enormous amounts of information, ask BIG questions that produce a conceptual framework, and organize facts meaningfully and memorably into the framework in the process of creating a book. It takes a skilled writer to make passion infectious to the reader. And in the process, the student cannot help but learn content.

• The rise in Personal Learning Networks for teachers demonstrates the need for on-demand professional development. Teachers want new ideas that they can put into practice immediately. We have evidence that when authors and teachers collaborate novel and engaging practices emerge that involve students in both literacy and content.

• When curriculum experts work with authors, they gain insight into how to help their teachers use these books most effectively.

It has been our experience that close reading of one book in collaboration with the author produces an extraordinary classroom experience.
