We are looking for under-served Title 1 Schools who are willing to work with authors via technology to create projects that foster learning in the content area with the use of nonfiction literature. We have done these programs with really spectacular results. For example, Alexandra Siy's book, Cars on Mars became the mentor text for a class in Montana that wrote its own book, "Off to the Cosmos," which the children were feverishly printing out on the last day of school. If we get some interest, we will look for funding to make it happen. These projects have a residual effect as they come with classroom sets of books and the teachers collaborate with the authors to design a unit that can be repeated for years to come without long-term involvement of the author. It has been our experience that when interacting with under-served students there is an intensity and thirst for excellence on the part of the children. They need a challenge that motivates all kinds of learning, including remediation of ela skills.
