Learning to read succeeds best with a multilayered approach. Grade school students benefit from reading support during the lessons for both in-class sessions and for remote sessions. During our early testing period, we developed the concept of a person joining the student during their online session. The reading coach role is to facilitate the student’s engagement during the lesson. A Reading Pal will pause the recorded lesson periodically and checking with the student to be sure the lesson skills were understood. At the end of the lesson, the Reading coach will reinforce the lesson by asking the student to re-read the content covered in the lesson.
The link below is an example of a reading pal reviewing the words at the end of a lesson.
https://vimeo.com/523335108
Our testing consistently measured a significant improvement in reading skills when a student engaged in a reading lesson three to five times per week. Reading lessons are typically 20 to 30 minutes this type of consistent exposure to a reading lesson will result in a progressive improvement in a student’s skills.
Reading pals will connect to a reading session via an online meeting, independent of the student's location. Some students will connect from home and others will connect from a classroom. All students are encouraged to wear headsets for clarity and minimizing distracting sounds to others in the same room.
