The City of Eureka and the Humboldt County Library are hosting a celebration of the new sensory play equipment at the City park next to the library. The event will include stories, crafts, and a treasure hunt inside the library, and refreshments and play time in the park. Volunteers are needed to help with crafts and the treasure hunt, to ask families to complete a survey about the play equipment and the park, and to take photos and ask parents to sign photo release forms. The City needs a little more time to get the playground equipment in, given the recent storm and power outage - so the new party date is December 14 instead of December 7.Available Shifts

Paradise Hills Elementary is hosting its annual Spring Fiesta! Our school celebrates culture, diversity and the Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA). This event is our way to fund VAPA instruction for our Title I school and its approximately 300 students. As we are approximately 90% under the poverty level, the majority of our students come from families who cannot otherwise afford to pay for these activities but we believe they are vital to the success of all students! Studies have found that when students are able to in Visual and Performing Arts programs (such as music) students who engage in music had higher average grades than students who do not participate in music. Our students are a little young to start thinking about the SAT's but as parents and educators it's never too early to plan ahead. According to the National Association for Music Education, on the 2012 SAT, students who participated in music scored an average of 31 points above average in reading, 23 points above average in math, and 31 points above average in writing. The Paradise Hills Elementary PTA works hard to earn the approximately $40,000 a year it takes to run our VAPA program. We earn on average $3,000 at this event but are shooting for $4,000 this year! We cannot afford to fund drumming, dance, ballet folklorico, choir and many of our additional activities without fundraisers such as this one. We also cannot hold this event without volunteers! Please help us fulfill our students VAPA dreams!Available Shifts

YABONGA CHILDREN’S PROJECTYabonga is the brainchild of Ulpha Robertson and Ursel Barnes, and dates back to 1998. Its initial aim was to provide a safe and stimulating space for preschool children in the townships of the Cape. Yabonga encourages an active lifestyle to our children as well as our adult staff members. Our new gym in Khayelitsha is used daily for activities such as yoga, boxing, zumba and grid. We are planning to offer martial arts in the future. Additionally, Yabonga hosts a weekend camp where children spend time outside playing games, hiking and meditation.
Since 2001 the initiative has employed more than 273 of the 1 000 women trained, and every year, more than 1 100 children and youth are assisted with nutritional, psychosocial and material support.
