First we learn to read—then we read to learn! Being a strong reader helps in every class and in every grade.

The best way to become a strong reader? Practice. And when kids get to pick out their own books—chances are, they will read them!

For some of our community’s children books are a luxury item. That is why, United Way partners with Scholastic to host a series of book fairs at Milwaukee Public Schools and Waukesha Public Schools called My Very Own Library. At these book fairs held every May and December, each student selects five free books to build their home library.

Each fair needs volunteers and that is where you come in.

Volunteers will be in teams of 2-3 per shift, with a United Way site lead assisting at each school.

Volunteers will:

- Help students pick out books
- Help keep books organized
- Assist with the check-out process of FREE books
- Assist in other areas of the classroom if needed
- No vaccination is required to volunteer at this event.

“My Nanny Angel volunteer helped alleviate some of the burdens by giving me a couple of hours to spend focusing on myself and what I needed to do to get better. I could rest assured and focus on my wellness and appointments knowing my kids were in safe hands.”
Nanny Angel Mom

Imagine a world where every family with cancer receives the care needed for their children – so they have enough time to care for themselves. Now, also imagine a world where every child receives the support they need to cope with their parent’s illness or death.

The Nanny Angel Network (NAN) offers rewarding volunteer positions for skilled childcare providers who are looking to make a difference in the lives of families.

Homework and Activity Angels provide supportive cancer care, by engaging children every week in homework-aid and/or age-appropriate activities to help them navigate the changes that come with a cancer diagnosis and healthily address their emotions.

Nanny Angels volunteers receive specialized training including grief and bereavement and receive the support of NAN’s Child Life Specialist throughout their volunteering time.

Become a Study Buddy and help ignite the power and potential of a young person to thrive at school. Current research suggests that young people are more likely to flourish when they are embedded in a web of relationships with supportive, caring adults. This is the essence of Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs: to help provide the relationships that young people need to succeed.

Study Buddies meet virtually with their Mentees (students in Grades 2 to 8) once a week for an hour. During their weekly meetings, Study Buddies help their Mentees with schoolwork or any related skills their Mentees want to build upon and practice. Study Buddy matches can meet during or outside of school hours.

Study Buddies are professionally trained and supported by BBBSCSI to ignite the unique power and potential of their Mentees. Study Buddies are matched with their Mentees after the successful completion of our application process and training.

Volunteers must apply on our website, consent to a Criminal Record Check (CRC), supply references, and complete an interview with one of our Mentoring Coordinators.

Visit the BBBSCSI website to apply: https://centralsoutherninteriorbc.bigbrothersbigsisters.ca/volunteer/study-buddy-application-form/
