We are a small free after-school program serving the East Charlotte k-8th graders. We aim to give students one-on-one support with homework and reading help while also offering mentorship, outdoor enrichment activities, art, and safe spaces to play and socialize. Family Biz Builder (FBB was established in 2014 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit youth training and development organization and serves low-income, at-risk children, ages 6-17, and their families in Tunica County Mississippi and neighboring Desoto and Coahoma counties. FBB’s mission is to provide character, life skills, and educational training programs to children and families. Our vision is to develop a growth mindset—an understanding that abilities and intelligence can be developed, with practice.Family Biz Builder is seeking volunteers to expand the ongoing work of its Literacy/Education Program and to empower more youth to use technology to learn to read. The goals of the program are to 1) develop a growth mindset (the understanding that abilities and intelligence can be developed, with effort); 2) improve behavior that affects learning ability; 3) move the needle from learning to read to reading to learn (academic achievement), and 4) increase parent engagement. The objectives are to 1) 24 of 30 participants will gain an understanding that intelligence and abilities can be developed with practice; 2) 15 of 30 participants will improve behavior, life skills, and academic achievement; 3) assign lessons to all 30 participants to increase the time on task, lessons completed and Lexile growth.
Family Biz Builder (FBB) has since its creation utilized technology education programs to allow participants to be expert users of technological devices while developing their reading skills. Technology and technologically based learning environments are critical to extending youth learning beyond the conventional classroom to allow participants of differing ability levels to pace their online learning in a way that is appropriate for them. The technology is also used to reinforce concepts introduced to program participants while in school and further exposure to learning in the after-school literacy/education program. Benefits of utilizing technology include; 1) customization of student assignments to meet individual needs of levels and time completion; 2) in-home use of programs for continuous student skill development; 3) immediate feedback of progress and automatic data tracking for assessment and evaluation purposes; 4) ability to organize data in various ways for report generation; and, 5) increase parent or guardian access to student work and progress.
Join us to help change the lives of the youth and their families in these communities.
