Washington, MO is one of the most river-centric towns on the Lower Missouri River. The beautiful park overlooking the river is the ideal place to hold, not just a community river clean-up, but also a local river festival highlighting the town's connection to the river. We are looking forward to a Saturday full of river clean-ups, music, river education and good food on the banks of the Missouri.Boats will ferry teams of volunteers to locations along the Missouri River for a couple hours to gather trash for later disposal. Volunteers that would rather work on land should let us know that when you register online.
Volunteers will receive a free Big Muddy boat ride, cool t-shirt, trash bags, gloves, lunch and a reusable water bottle. A hot lunch will be served around noon to all volunteers! Vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options will be available for folks. Please include dietary requests in your online registration so we make sure to order plenty. We'll also have a fun trash treasures contest, a favorite for kids and the young at heart. Be sure to hang on to those strange or interesting trash treasures you find during the morning clean-up!
We will also be hosting a River Festival the same day as the clean-up that will run from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The wonderful Gloria Attoun-Bauermeister, with the help of the amazing Washington River Festival Committee, has been putting this all together to support and benefit Missouri River Relief. This festival is a celebration of the river and Washington's ties to it! Here is some of what's going on so far.

At the event, volunteers comb the beaches to find, remove and record litter and debris.By removing the debris, volunteers are making the beaches and waterways safer and more enjoyable for marine life and beach goers alike. By recording the data, volunteers contribute to a legacy of information on marine debris that has been growing for 34 years!
This information is utilized by COA to drive legislation that will stop marine debris at the source, saving our precious beaches and marine life. This event also provides a powerful take-home lesson for volunteers who might be unfamiliar with the severity of our world's marine debris problem.

The purpose of this activity is to move 13 yards of dirt from the driveway of the fire department to the planting site, about 15 feet. It is the first step in establishing a new garden. It is a project of the Crestwood Beautification Committee whose goal is to beautify Crestwood with flowers and other plants and to bring the City and Community together. Our local Kohl's is directly behind our fire house so it would be a good collaboration. Also, the committee members are mostly retired and of an older generation who need help with a project which requires a high level of strength and endurance. The dirt needs to be moved as soon as possible after delivery so it does not block the fire department driveway. The dirt will need to be shoveled into wheelbarrows and then moved up a curb and about 15 feet where it will be dumped on the planting site.
