The Lethbridge river valley is home to hundreds of species of birds, animals and flowering plants. Each year garbage and debris gets caught in the coulees turning these unique, naturally formed features into unsightly spots that have the potential to injure the wildlife species that call them home. Invasive species also pose a threat to the river valley’s biodiversity with the potential to negatively impact local plant communities.

This conservation project from the Friends of the Helen Schuler Nature Centre (HSNC) will demonstrate positive action in protecting Lethbridge’s natural landscape through education and by focusing volunteer efforts on improving the local ecosystem. HSNC will organize four different volunteer campaigns in the river valley that will remove garbage from the river valley and shorelines, remove invasive species and raise awareness of the need to clean up after pets in natural areas. Overall, HSNC expects to engage over 500 volunteers with these opportunities that educate, empower, and instill a sense of community pride.

In a sincere effort to give back to the Township and the surrounding community – who together give us so many services and support – the Arc carefully trims the annual growth of vegetation by hand along Cave Road. This enables emergency vehicles, school buses, neighbors, and visitors to safely and easily pass through the area. Because we rely on volunteers, we can do this work by hand as opposed to the more time-efficient but more mechanical means employed by road crews. The result? Cave Road is able to retain its time-honored pristine beauty for all of us to enjoy!

Augusta University is a committed member of our local community. Every year, the students, staff, and faculty of AU join together to volunteer their time for countless local organizations, including the Land Trust. This year, we’ll be building all sorts of cool things on our Greystone Preserve, including a new home for our bees, arbors and benches for the campus, and planting more goodies in the food forest.

You don’t have to be a part of AU to lend a hand, either. Sign up today and help beautify your community.

The 34th annual Coastal Cleanup Day event invites volunteers from our community to clean up trash. Every year since 2005, ECOSLO coordinates beach cleanups from San Simeon to Nipomo. Even though Central Coast beaches are cleaner than some, last year we removed nearly 6,500 pounds of trash and recyclables from our beaches, waterways and lakes.

In California, Coastal Cleanup Day holds the distinction of drawing the most participation of any volunteer event over its thirty year history. As County Coordinator, ECOSLO works with the California Coastal Commission to bring out our community in the campaign for healthy coasts, shorelines, and oceans. Last year, 1,300 volunteers removed trash and recyclables from 30 cleanup locations throughout San Luis Obispo County.

Check out our event page at http://ecoslo.org/coastal-cleanup-day/. Please note that while liking and joining this event on facebook helps make it visible (and please share it everywhere!), we ask that you sign up online at http://ecoslo.org/coastal-cleanup-day/ to help us anticipate supplies needed for each site.

The annual Bidwell Park and Chico Creeks Cleanup focuses on bringing the community together to remove several tons of waste from our local waterways and park system. This event has been successful for 30 years due in large part to the help of 400-500 volunteers and financial sponsorship from local businesses. By coming together as a community to take care of our local natural environment we can help preserve it for the enjoyment of future generations.
