Celebrate fall by helping to collect native seed in the Dixon Refuge’s beautiful restored prairies and wetlands. No experience is needed for this fun and easy volunteer activity!

The seed harvested by volunteers will later be cleaned, sorted, and planted over the winter in less diverse areas of the Refuge. This is an important and easy way you can participate in restoration at this Wetland of International Importance!

Bring a water bottle; snacks, tools, and gloves will be provided. Join us for a picnic lunch at the site’s farmhouse when you’re done harvesting. Please wear appropriate clothing for fieldwork (e.g., long pants, closed-toe shoes). Children 16 years old or younger must be accompanied by parents or other chaperones.

Meet at 9:00 a.m. at the parking lot by the observation tower. A map and driving directions are available here: http://www.wetlands-initiative.org/images/pdf-docs/dixon_refuge_map_and_directions.pdf

Please email us at twi@wetlands-initiative.org if you plan to attend.

Last year, over 300 volunteers joined together to remove almost 3 tons of trash from the banks of the Farmington River, and we’ll need just as much help this year! You provide your time, and we can provide the supplies as well as lunch, coffee, apple cider, and more. If you have a pick up truck or other large vehicle, let us know; all of that trash has to get to the dumpsters somehow. Locations include Avon, Burlington/Farmington/Canton, Bristol, Simsbury and Windsor.

Main meet-up locations are the FRWA office at 749 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, CT and Collinsville Canoe & Kayak, 41 Bridge Street, Collinsville CT. If interested in volunteering, you may show up at either of these main locations between 10am and 1 pm to register and join in.

Call FRWA at (860) 658-4442 or email apetras@frwa.org with any additional questions or to preregister at your preferred location.

PLEASE SIGNUP FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY AT https://www.eventbrite.com/o/guadalupe-river-park-conservancy-30605678496

Minimum age to volunteer is 10 years old. Chaperones are required age 15 and under.
Our Historic Orchard has been going through the process of preparing it for new trees. An orchards typical life is about 20-25 years, and the current orchard was planted in 1994 (26 years ago!).

We are planting new trees in January and February!! We have removed a number of trees to make way for varieties that will be better adapted for our current and future climate. (Don't worry, we are keeping a few of the remaining trees because they are healthy). Come help our young orchard thrive!

Limited tickets available on Eventbrite, we are looking for volunteers to help us with the revitalization of the orchard. These workdays will focus on sheet mulching, litter removal in and around the orchard, pulling and removal of weeds, minor repairs to infrastructure as needed, and generalized care and maintenance of the orchard itself and our NEW BABY TREES. We will meet at the picnic area. We know many are anxious to help our parks these days, please join us as we practice safe measures of volunteerism.

Air quality projected to be "unhealthy for sensitive groups" or rain cancels the event.

We will be adhering to County Public Health recommendations, which includes:
*You must bring and wear a face mask when within 6 feet of others. If you are unable to wear a mask for any reason this event will not be a good fit for you.
*Social distancing (6 feet apart) is required unless volunteers are from the same household.

In addition, please note that:
*You must bring your own work gloves suitable for working in a garden, we are unable to provide any. Leather gloves are highly recommended!
*Please bring a full water bottle (the water fountain will be unavailable).
*The restrooms will be available after 10am

Volunteers are asked to arrive by 9:00am for a contact-less sign-in, workday instructions will follow. We will be providing some tools, but if you have hand pruners and/or loppers to bring, even better! The work will begin at 9:00am running through 11:30am, or when it gets to be too hot (seasonal). School groups or corporate teams must contact the volunteer coordinator to schedule events.

Minimum age to volunteer is 10 years old. Chaperones are required age 15 and under.

Air quality projected to be "unhealthy for sensitive groups" or rain cancels the event.

ABOUT COASTAL CLEANUP DAY AT THE BAY
Each September, 1,000 people—including families, friends, co-workers, scouts and school groups—come from all over Orange County to volunteer their time at Upper Newport Bay. With last year's event going virtual due to the pandemic, we are gearing up to return to our annual in-person event, and a much needed deep cleaning of the Bay. Our goal is to remove over 10,000 pounds of trash! We have already experienced a new wave of waste from the increased use of single use plastics, disposable masks, and gloves over this past year. These items and others risk harming wildlife, pollute our waterways, and threaten public health and your support is crucial to our mission.

Around 800 volunteers are needed to help remove trash from the uplands and marsh areas of the Bay and participate in invasive plant removal. Volunteers will meet directly at 20-25 different mini-cleanup day sites around the 11-mile bay including the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center, Newport Aquatic Center, Big Canyon, Vista Point, Jamboree Bridge, etc. Exact meeting location will be announced and sent to everyone (group leaders) prior to September 20, 2025.
