Fair Observer -- a citizen journalism platform -- is looking for Editors & Content Reviewers with a keen eye for detail, interested in World Affairs, Geopolitics, and learning the fundamentals of fact-checking.We are looking for three or four volunteers who could support our editorial team regularly, from 1h per day to 15 hours per week, depending on your availability. Join us as we walk and clean up the 2 mile walking path - Baldwin Loop in the Woodlawn neighborhood in Pawtucket. We will pick up trash and make notes on where we might be able to plant trees in the future.We have gloves and bags but feel free to bring your own as we do not know how many volunteers will show up. Snacks will be provided. Masks must be worn and social distancing guidelines for COVID-19 will be followed.
We will gather at The Empowerment Factory at 12:00pm in the Hope Artiste Village. Then get into teams and each team will take up a small section of the 2 mile path.
All ages and abilities welcome. This is also a perfect event for people that need community service hours.

Help protect the native plant and animal populations by taking part in the management of non-native invasive plant species.An invasive plant is defined as a plant that is not native to a particular ecosystem, whose introduction does or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health. There are currently approximately 2,100 plant species recorded from Maine. Approximately one third of those are not native. Of those plants that are not native, only a small fraction are considered invasive, but these have the potential to cause great harm to our landscape (Maine Department of Agriculture, conservation & Forestry).
Hirundo is focusing much effort on the management of the severely invasive and non-native plant Glossy Buckthorn. It was introduced in 1800’s as an ornamental shrub for fence rows and wildlife habitat. Just like other non-native invasive plants Glossy Buckthorn, native to Europe, North Africa, and Central Asia, lacks natural predators to keep it in check. Like so many other invasive species it leaves out early and retains its leaves longer in comparison to native plant species. This adaptation increases energy production, allows the plants to produce more leaves, seed, and offspring, and outcompeting native plants. Over a short period of time habitat providing food & shelter native animals rely on are reduced and ultimately eliminated.
Volunteers gain experience and knowledge in identification of non-native invasive species while lending a hand saving the native landscape for the precious wildlife. We will be using cutting tools including loopers, clippers and handsaws. Thank you!
Hirundo 7-mile trail network has been supported by dedicated volunteers contributing their skills to keep the trails safe and accessible. Trail-related work includes maintenance of the trails (removing blow downs, removing undergrowth/trimming branches), building new bridging, blazing trails, placing signage, and more).

Hi Kohl's employees! We would love to welcome you to volunteer at Schlitz Audubon.Our primary group volunteer opportunity is working outdoors restoring and improving natural habitat. Volunteers work with our Land Management team to maintain our beautiful 185-acre nature preserve.
Tasks vary depending on the conservation priorities at the Center and the time of year. Your group will most likely assist by removing invasive plant species. Other potential projects include planting seedlings, trees, or shrubs or performing trail maintenance.
IMPORTANCE OF INVASIVE PLANT REMOVAL
Invasive species wreak havoc on native food webs and alter habitats causing displacement of native plants and animals. Invasive plants and animals also disrupt valuable ecosystem services, causing economic harm and impacting human health. By removing invasive species, such as dame’s rocket and garlic mustard, your volunteer group will support our conservation work at Schlitz Audubon, encourage native plants to thrive, and allow ecosystem services to properly function.
LEARN AS YOU VOLUNTEER
We like to make your time at the Center an educational experience as well! As you conduct your land stewardship activity, our Land Manager would be happy to share more information about our conservation efforts, identify native or invasive plants, and answer any questions you may have about the importance of your support.
WHEN TO VOLUNTEER AND OTHER DETAILS
Land Steward Volunteers are at the Center on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, or Saturdays from 9:00am – 12:00pm. You are welcome to join one of these sessions or to book your own private group session from 1:00pm – 4:00pm. Tuesday and Thursday work sessions can also be arranged pending availability.
Outdoor land stewardship requires some bending, squatting, twisting, and lifting. Volunteers are asked to dress for the weather and to wear long pants and sturdy shoes/boots. Clothes and shoes worn are likely to get dirty, and possibly wet.
