Forest Fire Risk Prevention Derivatives in Northern California
Bobby Fishkin, lead author
In 2018, Sacramento was named the ""the Most Polluted City on Earth"" due to ""smoke from Camp Fire,"" This proposal aims to prevent that from happening again through adopting a systemic approach and collaborating with stakeholders to actively prevent future such events. The insurance industry, along with institutional chief risk officers, have begun to recognize the importance of moving from ""loss compensation to loss prevention.""
CrowdDoing and Project Heather propose launching a prevention derivative with two new stakeholders: (a) contingent payers who pay in proportion to the reduction in risk, and (b) impact investors who finance social innovations in which their return is similarly proportional to the reduction in risk. It will build on existing precedents for contingent contracts involving social- innovation-based risk prevention.
Financial Analyst Volunteer, Forest Fire Prevention Derivatives, CrowdDoing
A spectrum of forest fire risk prevention approaches are available: from creative new social innovations to well-established interventions. The forest fire risk prevention derivative would first survey existing forest fire prevention interventions in Greater Sacramento with an eye towards which ones might be suitable to support and expand. It would then review global social innovations that might be relevant to Northern California to determine which to replicate. Entities involved in risk management and risk securitisation, from insurers to reinsurers to retrocessionaires, ought to welcome the chance to share liability proportionally through a commons of prevention innovations. The prevention derivative can expand as more institutions and individuals join as contingent payers and impact investors in order prevent a larger portion of collective risk. Payments by private and public institutions to support prevention derivatives can be in-kind, through services, and/or financial.

The only way CrowdDoing.world can realize its impact potential is through virtual volunteers, service learners(http://blog.reframeit.com/service-learning-and-skilled-volunteering/), and micro-leaders (https://real-leaders.com/leveraging-micro-leadership-to-make-aspirational-goals-achievable/) coming together.
See this brief video aboutMicro-leadership at CrowdDoing (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhdB2YJ8Ocs&app=desktop). Micro-leadership means that each person adopts a dimension of responsibility for a collective problem in our society through collaborating on that area creatively individually and together through social innovation.

Help protect the native plant and animal populations by taking part in the management of non-native invasive plant species. An invasive plant is defined as a plant that is not native to a particular ecosystem, whose introduction does or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health. There are currently approximately 2,100 plant species recorded from Maine. Approximately one third of those are not native. Of those plants that are not native, only a small fraction are considered invasive, but these have the potential to cause great harm to our landscape (Maine Department of Agriculture, conservation & Forestry).
Hirundo is focusing much effort on the management of the severely invasive and non-native plant Glossy Buckthorn. It was introduced in 1800’s as an ornamental shrub for fence rows and wildlife habitat. Just like other non-native invasive plants Glossy Buckthorn, native to Europe, North Africa, and Central Asia, lacks natural predators to keep it in check. Like so many other invasive species it leaves out early and retains its leaves longer in comparison to native plant species. This adaptation increases energy production, allows the plants to produce more leaves, seed, and offspring, and outcompeting native plants. Over a short period of time habitat providing food & shelter native animals rely on are reduced and ultimately eliminated.
Volunteers gain experience and knowledge in identification of non-native invasive species while lending a hand saving the native landscape for the precious wildlife. We will be using cutting tools including loopers, clippers and handsaws. Thank you!
Hirundo 7-mile trail network has been supported by dedicated volunteers contributing their skills to keep the trails safe and accessible. Trail-related work includes maintenance of the trails (removing blow downs, removing undergrowth/trimming branches), building new bridging, blazing trails, placing signage, and more).

Hi Kohl's employees! We would love to welcome you to volunteer at Schlitz Audubon. Our primary group volunteer opportunity is working outdoors restoring and improving natural habitat. Volunteers work with our Land Management team to maintain our beautiful 185-acre nature preserve.
Tasks vary depending on the conservation priorities at the Center and the time of year. Your group will most likely assist by removing invasive plant species. Other potential projects include planting seedlings, trees, or shrubs or performing trail maintenance.
IMPORTANCE OF INVASIVE PLANT REMOVAL
Invasive species wreak havoc on native food webs and alter habitats causing displacement of native plants and animals. Invasive plants and animals also disrupt valuable ecosystem services, causing economic harm and impacting human health. By removing invasive species, such as dame’s rocket and garlic mustard, your volunteer group will support our conservation work at Schlitz Audubon, encourage native plants to thrive, and allow ecosystem services to properly function.
LEARN AS YOU VOLUNTEER
We like to make your time at the Center an educational experience as well! As you conduct your land stewardship activity, our Land Manager would be happy to share more information about our conservation efforts, identify native or invasive plants, and answer any questions you may have about the importance of your support.
WHEN TO VOLUNTEER AND OTHER DETAILS
Land Steward Volunteers are at the Center on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, or Saturdays from 9:00am – 12:00pm. You are welcome to join one of these sessions or to book your own private group session from 1:00pm – 4:00pm. Tuesday and Thursday work sessions can also be arranged pending availability.
Outdoor land stewardship requires some bending, squatting, twisting, and lifting. Volunteers are asked to dress for the weather and to wear long pants and sturdy shoes/boots. Clothes and shoes worn are likely to get dirty, and possibly wet.
Interested in scheduling a time to volunteer, or have questions? Click the "Inquire About Group Volunteering" button to fill out the form at the bottom of this webpage: https://www.schlitzaudubon.org/get-involved/volunteer/group-volunteer-opportunities-schlitz-audubon-nature-center/

Mount Sanitas is one of the most popular trail systems in Boulder County. Over 15,500 hours have been spent hauling material, building structures, and repairing tread since 2016. Since the pandemic, visitor use has increased and will continue to be a heavy use trail system for years to come.

We are currently looking for volunteers who are eager to learn more about Southern California flora and fungi. Volunteers will meet at Marigold Farms Inc. and will then spend a 3 to 4 hours in the Los Padres National Forest. We will be identifying both native and invasive floral and fungal species and learning more about their medicinal and culinary uses. The idea is to encourage individuals to think outside the box when it comes to food.
Research is ongoing as we create the Marigold Farms Database for Flora and Fungal Species.
This database will be free to the public to use as a resource guide.
Volunteers must be able to hike up to 5 miles and have basic knowledge of plants.

Sky Island Alliance, The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and hundreds of volunteers have worked hard since 2015 to remove invasive periwinkle (Vinca major) from the creek beds in Aravaipa Canyon Preserve—one of the most intact native fisheries left in the state of Arizona. By pulling the entire vinca plant and growing native flora in its stead, we’ve been able to enhance habitat for many Sky Island species, including loach minnow and spikedace. This project is made possible through conservation partnerships with: TNC, University of Arizona, National Park Service, Gila Watershed Partnership, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
