The Turner Street Clubhouse serves hundreds of low-income youth, ages 6-18, year-round with after-school and summer programs, including educational, arts, science, sports & recreation, social, character development and life skills. The Clubhouse provides a safe, clean and fun environment with caring, mentoring staff.

The goal of this volunteer opportunity is to create a warm, welcoming environment for our youth and families, and help keep youth off the streets and engaged in positive, structured activities. We need a major Fall clean up, including trash and weed collection in the playground, parking lot and building perimeter, dismantling disused raised beds, pruning shrubbery, and moving outdoor furniture to a central storage location. In the event of rain, or if we have time, we will paint an indoor wall, and clean up and reorganize two indoor storage areas that are full of program equipment.

The Vermont Community Garden Network (VCGN) is accepting applications for its board of directors. We seek skilled professionals who want to help create healthier Vermont communities with a high level of food security, food justice, and positive community development and social connections. Desirable skills and experience for board members include fundraising, finance, human resources, marketing, communications and technology.

The board is responsible for guiding the mission and purpose of the organization, strategic planning, fiduciary oversight, and evaluating the performance of the Executive Director. All board members play an active role in fundraising. The full board meets seven times a year in Burlington (with phone conferencing available) and each board member participates on at least one working committee (development, finance or governance).

The state’s 500+ community-based gardens feed tens of thousands of people in neighborhoods, schools, workplaces, housing sites, senior centers, food shelves, child and health care centers. VCGN's resources & technical assistance, grants, leadership training and food and garden education programs provide the tools and knowledge for sustainable community food production for all ages.

VCGN’s programs and partnerships help children and adults gain the confidence to play an active role in their local food system. The impact of this work is clear:
• Children who grow their own food are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables and to carry better nutritional habits into adulthood
• Gardens increase food security and self-sufficiency for housing site residents and provide unique wellness opportunities at workplaces
• Seniors and veterans gain physical, cognitive, emotional and social benefits which can reduce signs of dementia and enhance quality of life
• Everyone has increased access to healthy food and social connections

Established in 2006, the Caletas-Arío Wildlife Reserve includes a 750-acre terrestrial zone and a 12-nautical mile marine protected area, representing one of the last remaining expansive stretches of undeveloped coastline in the region.

Home to a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna, and set among two of the most important rivers on the peninsula, the Caletas-Arío Wildlife Reserve contains lush wetlands and mangrove ecosystems, tropical dry forests and rocky reefs teeming with life, estuaries and sandy beaches where sea turtles nest in the wild.

Experience the pristine natural landscape and explore the Caletas- Arío Reserve on a 2 ½ hour hike along the forested river on route to the beach.

While we at CIRENAS work hard to conserve and manage such an important ecosystem and watershed, the Caletas-Arío Wildlife Reserve has been severely affected by the presence of commercial rice fields, rife with chemical pesticides and unsustainable water use, causing great environmental damage and threatening the long-term sustainability of the entire Nicoya Peninsula.

Opportunity Details

In strategic alliance with Costa Rica’s environmentalist Blue Flag Watershed Project, we are leading protection and preservation efforts from the mouth of the Arío River and 4 kilometers to the northeast along the river basin.

Our watershed management program seeks to: raise awareness among surrounding communities toward developing sustainable waste management practices in their homes and businesses; spearhead clean-up campaigns along the banks of the Arío River; and engage local cattle ranchers toward adopting sustainable methods to minimize pollutants from affecting the river.

We invite CIRENAS visitors to join us in learning more and supporting our watershed management efforts, helping amplify our impact toward protecting the Arío River.

The coordinated permaculture systems at CIRENAS are a vibrant cornerstone of our commitment to living sustainably.

Lands formerly used as cattle pastures have been restored through permaculture design, emulating the cycles and patterns of nature to produce food on-site. As our plants grow and mature, CIRENAS on-site permaculture will harvest 75% of all food consumed by our guests and staff, with surplus redistributed to the local community.

The pristine expanse of coastline adjacent to CIRENAS is an important site for the nesting of all four species of turtles found in Costa Rica – Olive Ridley, Leatherback, Hawksbill and Green turtles.

Natural predators like crabs, dogs, birds, and felines, along with human intervention for the consumption of turtle eggs, present a serious threat to the survival of baby turtles, with species endangerment becoming a near-future possibility.

CIRENAS seeks to work with volunteers, guests and local community members to ensure the longevity of Costa Rica’s turtle species as a vital part of the ocean ecosystem. We invite visitors and locals to learn about and participate in our turtle conservation efforts by locating existing nests, recording accurate data on regular evening and early morning patrols, developing best practices for protecting turtle nests, and helping baby turtles avoid predators on their journey to the sea.

Opportunity Details

Meet on the beach promenade at the end of California Street.

For all beach cleanups, please wear comfortable clothes, closed toed shoes and sunscreen. All volunteers are welcome to participate and must sign a liability waiver, but volunteers under 18 MUST have a parent or guardian present at the beginning of the cleanup to sign a liability waiver before the minor can participate. Pre-registration is NOT required unless your group is larger than 25 people (if it is, then email beachcleanups@ventura.surfrider.org) We will provide all supplies, but volunteers are always welcome to bring their own work gloves, trash bag/bucket, and/or reusable water bottle to reduce waste. Please be prepared to fill out a data card of all the trash you pick up-we need this information to help find the sources of trash on our beaches!! Thank you for your interest in helping keep our beaches clean.
