Here’s a description of some of the available volunteer opportunities:

BOARD AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS
Provide leadership to FLOW for strategic planning, fundraising, outreach and communications, and watershed action plan implementation.

COMMUNICATIONS AND OUTREACH VOLUNTEERS
Play a key role in written and visual communications, social networking, public speaking, and event planning to promote FLOW’s vision for the Olentangy.

OFFICE VOLUNTEERS
Help with database management, volunteer coordination, and research on key issues affecting the watershed.

RIVER STEWARDS AND STREAM MONITORING
Conduct cleanups and tree plantings, participate in stream monitoring, lead recreational activities, help maintain the Olentangy Water Trail.

Volunteers who complete 15 or more hours of service in a year will be recognized in our newsletter and on our website!

Special Events Volunteer

These volunteers are needed to assist in a variety of ways during one of our many special events throughout the year. Volunteers will perform various support duties from mailings, set-up and registration, to hosting, serving food and conducting games and activities among a host of other special assignments for these events. Some of our special events currently include Flight of Fancy, Trick or Tweet, International Migratory Bird Day and Bands, Birds and Beer, etc.

Education Program Support

Our education program support volunteers will work closely with our education staff to help assist with education programming needs. Volunteers may be asked to help set-up and clean-up after programs, join in activities as a second adult with a group of students, or lead small activities/games during a programs. Opportunities are available year-round and during the week and on weekends.

Citizen Science Volunteers

Volunteers will be responsible for gathering point count information, updating data bases, etc. These opportunities are avaible throughout the year during the week and on weekends.

Greeter

Volunteers will greet visitors to the Center, answer questions, answer the phone, give directions, distribute printed information and work with the Manager on Duty to create a safe and secure environment for guests. This opportunity is for those who love to meet knew people and have an outgoing personality. Opportunities are available throughout the week and on weekends.

Conservation Work Days

Conservation Work Day volunteers help lead small groups during a variety of workdays hosted at the center from early spring to late fall. These volunteers help gather tools and give instructions, monitor small groups of volunteers and join in with the conservation work at hand.

Volunteers are absolutely vital in maximizing the resources of Lake Erie Nature & Science Center. It is with your help, in a wide variety of ways, that we are able to continue to fulfill our mission.

Current Opportunities Wildlife Internship (ages 18 & up)
Interns take part in an unique educational opportunity by assisting with animal care, wildlife rehabilitation and public education. More information can be found here.

Wildlife Internships are available and applications will be accepted at the following times:

Academic year (September - May): Applications accepted during the month of August
Summer (May - August): Applications accepted during the month of March
Facilities Volunteer - Ground Maintenance (ages 18 & up)
This position is responsible for assisting in performing general grounds maintenance in the Center’s backyard gardens, including pulling weeds, plant care, leaf raking and removal, sweeping paths to clear stones and mulch, snow removal. We are requiring a candidate who can commit to a regular schedule which could include weekly, bi‐weekly or monthly.

Wild Summer Reading Camp Volunteer (ages 13 & up)
We are looking for Summer Volunteers to read to, and with, children and to assist Summer Campers with Accelerated Reader computer quizzes and journaling activities. Campers will be children entering grades 1-4 at local area schools.

Volunteers must commit to at least four shifts over the four week period.

We rely heavily on the dedication of our many volunteers. Volunteers founded Lake Erie WATERKEEPER in 2004, and have been increasingly crucial to our advocacy and education campaigns ever since. Please see the list below and let us know which project(s) you would like to lend a hand. We can also look into customizing a project that best fits your interests and skills.

WATERKEEPER "ACTION ALERT" RESPONSE TEAM
Volunteers will pledge to follow up quickly on all "Action Alert" emails sent by Lake Erie WATERKEEPER to the email list. Examples include signing petitions or calling public officials about an upcoming decision that affects water quality.

RIVER CLEAN-UPS
Volunteers will attend pre-scheduled cleanups advertised by Lake Erie WATERRKEEPER and/or set up their own cleanup(s). If setting up your own cleanup, size can vary as much as needed, from a 1-person litter-pickup to a large cleanup involving an entire group. Lake Erie WATERKEEPER can help provide guidelines for location selection, recycling/disposal of collected litter, and safety precautions.

EVENT PUBLICITY TEAM
Volunteers will help us advertise fundraisers and educational events, and also get our name, logo, and contact information more visible in the community. Event publicity may also be done via internet.

INTERNET OUTREACH: FACEBOOK
Lake Erie WATERKEEPER is new to Facebook and can use help with MySpace for education & outreach, and has won several MySpace outreach and fundraising awards. We would like to establish education and outreach opportunities through " Facebook fans" and " Facebook causes" pages. Contact us to helps.

LAKE AND RIVER TRIBUTARIES RESEARCH AND OUTREACH
Volunteers will help identify and catalogue Lake Erie and Lake Erie tributary rivers amenities such as marinas, restaurants, camp grounds, boat ramps, etc. so that Lake Erie WATERKEEPER will be able to post information on its website as a service to its stakeholders and use the information for outreach. Research will include computer and phone book research as well as research in the field to identify the amenities and to distribute outreach materials at these locations.

POLLUTION PERMIT RESEARCH
Volunteers will identify zip codes within the Lake Erie and its river tributary watersheds and use them to run searches for National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permits - permitted discharges of pollution allowed by the Clean Water Act. Searches will be run on several easy-to-use Environmental Protection Agency websites. This research helps us identify current/potential polluters. This project may also include data entry to help us organize information about current/potential polluters.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORS OF NEWSPAPERS
Volunteers will choose one or more newspaper(s), whether scholastic, small town, or big city, and scan them daily for articles relevant to Lake Erie and its river tributaries. (For example, articles about pollution, wildlife habitat, recreation, etc). After finding a relevant article, volunteers will write a personal letter about that article, in support of a cleaner, healthier Lake Erie and Lake Erie rivers watershed. For some talking points and background information about a variety of Lake Erie and its river watershed issues, we suggest you review relevant sections of our website, www.lakeeriewaterkeeper.org. Volunteers will send their letter to the newspaper’s editor for possible publication, following the length and submission directions relayed in each newspaper (or newspaper website). Please address the letter on behalf of yourself as a concerned citizen, not on behalf of Lake Erie WATERKEEPER.

RESEARCHING RELEVANT EVENTS & TABLING AT THEM
Volunteers will peruse the " Calendar" section of Lake Erie WATERKEEPER’s website to see if there are events listed at which they could help represent us. Volunteers will also research similar events not listed on our website. After asking us if a given event would be good for representing us, volunteers will get materials to display/distribute there at the Lake Erie WATERKEEPER’s table/booth.

Volunteers assist the Nature Center in achieving the goals of conserving the land, connecting people to nature and inspiring environmental stewardship. Volunteers are welcome at all levels of participation to support programming and other activities.

Our volunteers are involved in pulling invasive species, garden area maintenance, outdoor adventure camps, education classes, welcome desk assistance, special events assistance, and office work. The Volunteer Program works with individuals, youth (13 years of age or older), senior project candidates, college interns and groups to provide meaningful experiences at the Nature Center. All individual volunteers must fill-out an application and be interviewed to be accepted into the volunteer program. The Sanctuary relies on a dedicated core of volunteers. Because of these generous individuals the Sanctuary has become what it is today. The grounds, building maintenance and trails are primarily managed our volunteer staff. Volunteers also help with the operations in the visitor's center and help staff during large events.

Conservation Teams
Volunteers can work as ORF Conservation team members at public park partner locations in restoring and improving local habitats. Such work can include planting trees and removing invasive plant species.

Ohio Wildlife Center is a volunteer-driven organization. We could not pursue our non-profit mission without the hard work of over 200 dedicated volunteers!

Adults (18 and over) can volunteer in any of our core areas. Choose an area and fill out an online volunteer application. Our volunteer office will contact you with orientation information (which includes training information, fees, and required forms).

There is a $55 fee that covers the cost of required training, supplies, and background check (completed background checks are required before a new volunteer can start their experience).

Adult Volunteers at the Wilds

The Wilds welcomes conservation minded, dedicated, enthusiastic people over the age of 18 to serve as volunteers. While we do not have volunteers working directly with our animals, there are a number of other opportunities at the Wilds, such as greeting visitors, assisting with Sunset Safari, helping during special events, working in the field with Restoration Ecology or in additional capacities.

Some volunteers assist during the visitor season (May through October) while others support various departments all year long.

These opportunities are primarily long-term and volunteers are assigned based on operational needs and availability.
