This large site is managed by a small staff team (2 people) plus a number of regular volunteers and we are therefore always looking for extra volunteers who would like to help out with a variety of horticultural tasks and activities across the year. Those with gardening experience would be welcomed but this is not a requirement, just a desire to get involved and work outdoors whatever the weather!

The Plant Exchange, an Oakland based non-profit organization, is working with several local agencies to provide community gardens for underserved populations. We are working with North Oakland Senior Center, the Housing Consortium of the East Bay (which operates a residential facility for adults with physical disabilities), The Hatlen Center for the Blind, The Center for Independent Living and more. The goal is to provide gardens for these agencies at the sites where their clients work and receive programming. With the community gardens projects, we believe that by installing gardens at these sites, we can provide a resource that provides value in a number of ways. Gardens can be therapeutic spaces that are inviting to the community and help to beautify and enhance a space. Gardens also promote a healthy lifestyle - both by connecting people with fruits and vegetables, and by being a light physical activity that people with physical limitations can still enjoy. Furthermore, for some of the populations we are working with - people with disabilities, veterans, etc. - gardening can be a marketable skill that can lead to employment opportunities (something many of the sites have mentioned to us as a reason why they are interested in this project).
Dates and times can be tailored to meet your teams needs.
