More than 250 million tons of plastic are estimated to make its way into our ocean by 2025. The environmental damage caused by plastic debris alone is estimated at US$13 billion a year. The AWARE flagship program, Dive Against Debris, improves the health of ocean ecosystems through local action while providing valuable information about underwater debris to help inform policy change for global impact. Divers are often the first to witness human impact on the marine environment and are uniquely positioned to help report, remove and advocate to stop marine debris at its source.Since the program launched in 2011, divers have aided over 35,000 entangled marine animals and reported more than 2.4 million pieces of marine debris to inform groundbreaking research that is helping to create healthier oceans.

Have you gone on a hike in southeastern New Hampshire recently? Maybe you got to enjoy a particularly well-maintained trail, or maybe you appreciated a well-marked property boundary that helped you not get lost. Have you ever stopped to think about who is responsible for these small touches that increase your enjoyment of the woods? Well, it's volunteers like you!Bear-Paw Regional Greenways is seeking volunteers to join its Volunteer Land Steward program. If you enjoy being outside and want to help improve conserved lands in your neighborhood, this is the job for you. Land Stewards are assigned to a Bear-Paw property and paired with a more experienced Bear-Paw volunteer to act as a "steward" for that property. That could mean just walking the boundaries once a year, or it could mean helping out with blazing boundary lines, picking up trash, maintaining trails, or other projects. It only takes a few hours a year!
Volunteer Land Stewards will receive free training in basic outdoors skills, including map reading, basic compass skills, and how to be safe outdoors. Land Stewards will also be paired with an experienced Bear-Paw volunteer for one-on-one training on how to steward the particular property assigned to them.
As part of our effort to cultivate a strong Volunteer Land Steward program that will sustain itself from year to year, we prefer to recruit volunteers who live nearby the properties they will be stewarding. Bear-Paw has properties located in the following towns in New Hampshire: Allenstown, Barnstead, Candia, Deerfield, Epsom, Hooksett, Northwood, Nottingham, Pittsfield, Raymond, and Strafford.
