History:
The Marin Headlands Nursery team of staff and volunteers grow plants to preserve and restore the Marin Headlands. This year we’re growing over 35,000 plants for many important projects, two highlight projects being Hawk Hill and Rodeo Valley Trail. It’s hard to believe such a vast, beautiful, and diverse wilderness is so close to a major metropolitan area. The Marin Headlands is a crown jewel of the Golden Gate National Parks abounding with scenic locations and remarkable historic sites.

How you can help:
Come grow with us! The dedication and support of our volunteers are vital in the effort to grow thriving plants. Our volunteer programs involve something different each season and each week. Activities may include seed collecting, transplanting seedlings, pruning plants, processing seeds for the next growing season, maintaining the facility, or something else that is fun and outdoors.

In addition to joining us at a volunteer session, visitors are welcome to stop in while exploring the Headlands to come enjoy the nursery’s courtyard demonstration garden, which is a treasure trove of native plants.

History:
The Redwood Creek Nursery is nestled within the Redwood Creek watershed and is just downstream of the majestic redwoods of Muir Woods National Monument. The Nursery is growing over 15,000 container plants, as well as about 5,000 divisions for restoration efforts in the Redwood Creek watershed.

The nursery supports special efforts at Muir Beach to protect and enhance habitat for the endangered coho salmon and steel-head trout. We also grow a small amount of plants to diversify habitats surrounding the Dias Ridge trail, as well as to enhance the understory of Muir Woods.

How you can help:
Join us for a volunteer program among the beautiful California buckeyes that surround the Redwood Creek Nursery! We need the help of volunteers for propagule collection (seeds, divisions, and cuttings), seed cleaning, transplanting, pruning, weeding, general plant care, and nursery maintenance.

Here you can come learn about how to grow, plant, and care for native plants, as well as the propagation of native plants, and the maintenance of our restoration sites while enjoying the company of others who love to be outside and getting their hands dirty!

Fort Funston
- Once being home to some heavy weaponry: first, the 16-inch guns of Battery Davis, and then Nike missiles, Fort Funston features 200 foot high sandy bluffs on San Francisco’s southwest coast where the winds blow reliably wildly. Fort Funston is one of the premier hang-gliding spots in the country with a network of trails that make it ideal for hiking and horseback riding. Dog owners will be happy to know they can take leashes off here. It is also now home to the Fort Funston Native Plant Nursery!

Habitat Restoration
- Help enhance rare native plant habitat and create important wildlife corridors at Fort Funston. Habitat restoration is a proactive way to participate in environmental healing while removing invasive plant species and re-vegetating native species. Come learn about local plants and animals and be a habitat hero!

Habitat History
- Plants with deep roots and a tolerance for harsh conditions are uniquely adapted to growing on a constantly shifting sand-dune landscape. The San Francisco peninsula was once covered with sand dunes, and today the peninsula’s largest remaining dune field can be found at Fort Funston.

- Bank swallows (Riparia riparia) once migrated through California in great numbers, but today they are listed as a state threatened species; their only known coastal nesting sites are at Fort Funston and Año Nuevo. Swallows dig holes in the sandstone cliffs and raise their young between March and June. In July and August, the chicks fly from the nests, and their parents follow soon after.

Stroller Hikes is entirely volunteer run. Our most common volunteer types are outdoor event leaders, which lead stroller hikes, toddler treks, bike-a-hikes, rock climbing, and more. To become a leader, the adult should have a child to bring, be patient and good at engaging the group and determining their needs and pace, and have knowledge of basic first aid and nature hazards such as poison oak, rattlesnakes, and ticks. Consistency is helpful for encouraging other families in attending, so outdoor events should be for 90 minutes at least once per month, at the same time. Locations can be variable. Contact admin@strollerhikes.com to express interest in this position. You will receive t-shirts for your family, some marketing materials, and a first aid kit, and guidance about event leadership. This is a wonderful way to build a connection with other families and within your own, give to the community, and experience some amazing outdoor spaces!
