Join a community tree planting event and help beautify Las Cruces, reduce the impacts of extreme heat, and celebrate the launch of the Doña Ana Soil and Water Conservation District NeighborWoods program (DASWCD NeighborWoods), which will be bringing 2,000 trees to urban areas of Doña Ana County!DASWCD NeighborWoods is especially designed to protect residents of Doña Ana County from the harmful health effects of extreme heat, which are intensified in urban areas by heat-absorbing surfaces and lack of shade. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), urban heat islands experience higher temperatures due to buildings and roads absorbing and re-emitting more solar heat than natural landscapes. Trees help lower surface and air temperatures through shade and evapotranspiration, potentially reducing temperatures by 20–45°F in shaded areas.
At this community tree planting event, volunteers will work in small groups, guided by experienced team leaders, to plant trees in pre-dug holes in an urban neighborhood along S. Solano Dr. in Las Cruces.

Friends of Gateway Green is looking to expand and diversify its Board of Directors. The organization, founded in 2009, has no paid employees, so it has a working board. There have been as many as nine board members, but there are only five at this time. As we add board members, we are looking to increase the diversity (ethnic, gender, language, skill set). Relative to skill sets, we would love to add one or more of the following to the mix -- legal, accounting, public health, environmental restoration/management, or grant writing.

When refugees arrive in the United States, something that is often dearly missed is access to produce that was readily available in their home country but not in the United States. International Rescue Committee’s New Roots program is one where our refugee clients are provided small plots of land, free of charge, that our clients can use to grow their own produce. Clients can grow produce for their own consumption or to sell at local farmers’ markets, which provides an additional economic opportunity, and IRC will provide training for small business enterprise creation in their new country. Urban agriculture also presents an excellent opportunity for socialization, especially for seniors, and can be beneficial in mitigating culture shock and the trauma of relocating to a new country. At Horseneck Farm (26826 86th Ave S, Kent, WA 98030), IRC has a large plot of land that needs some upkeep: weeding, removing blackberries, clearing brush along an irrigation line, and several other gardening/urban agriculture-related tasks. This is a great opportunity for a large group!
Make sure to wear gear that you are comfortable wearing outside and that you don’t mind getting dirty. If you have gardening gloves, please bring them (we will have limited supplies on hand). Please also make sure to bring water, especially if it is warm.

We'd love to welcome you to volunteer at Schlitz Audubon. Our primary volunteer opportunity is working outdoors restoring and improving the natural habitat. Volunteers work with the Land Management team to maintain our 185-acre nature preserve.
Tasks vary depending on the conservation priorities at the Center and the weather conditions. Your group will most likely assist by removing invasive plant species. Other potential projects include planting seedlings, trees, or shrubs or performing trail maintenance.
IMPORTANCE OF INVASIVE PLANT REMOVAL
Invasive species wreak havoc on native food webs and alter habitats causing displacement of native plants and animals. Invasive plants and animals also disrupt valuable ecosystem services, causing economic harm and impacting human health. By removing invasive species, such as dame’s rocket and garlic mustard, your volunteer group will support our conservation work at Schlitz Audubon, encourage native plants to thrive, and allow ecosystem services to properly function.
LEARN AS YOU VOLUNTEER
We like to make your time at the Center an educational experience as well! As you conduct your land stewardship activity, our Resource Ecologists would be happy to share more information about our conservation efforts, identify native or invasive plants, and answer any questions you may have about the importance of your support.
WHEN TO VOLUNTEER AND OTHER DETAILS
Land Steward Volunteers are at the Center on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, or Saturdays from 9:00am – 12:00pm. You are welcome to join one of these sessions or to book your own private group session from 1:00pm – 4:00pm. Tuesday and Thursday work sessions can also be arranged pending availability.
Outdoor land stewardship requires some bending, squatting, twisting, and lifting. Volunteers are asked to dress for the weather and to wear long pants and sturdy shoes/boots. Clothes and shoes worn are likely to get dirty, and possibly wet.
