We have a beautiful campsite that is used by members of Girlguiding in Sussex and wider to experience the great outdoors and back to basic camps and evening and weekend activities. In order for all these events to take place the site needs to be maintained by volunteers to make sure it is safe and kept neat and tidy in order to get the most out of the events held there.

We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to help out at our camp site with maintenance. Examples of jobs can include cutting back hedgerow, painting, fencing, clearing ditches and raking leaves. All work will be supervised.

In 2014 the Heritage Foundation joined forces with the Royal Horticultural Society to create a sustainable community garden in Letchworth Garden City. The garden was created with support from local community gardening group, ARCH, in the Wynd, at the heart of Letchworth town centre, to inspire local residents and highlight the fantastic things that can be achieved in a garden or allotment. In 2015 a second garden was added at the Wynd to create a tranquil setting in the town centre and to encourage wildlife. The team of volunteers have looked after the Gardens from the outset, making sure the community can benefit and enjoy the space and locally grown produce.

Volunteers maintain the Wynd Community Gardens, improving the natural environment, ensuring plants thrive, encouraging wildlife and enhancing the experience of everyone spending time at or passing through the gardens. The range of plants in the gardens includes shrubs, flowers, fruit, herbs and vegetables.

The team of volunteers meet as a group fortnightly on Saturday mornings from 09:00-12:00 to carry out the community gardening sessions, plus there are opportunities to help at other times depending on volunteer availability and seasonal activities.

Activities include:
Preparing beds for planting
Sowing seeds and planting ready-grown plants
Looking after plants throughout the seasons
Watering and feeding plants
Trimming shrubs, pruning and managing plant growth
Helping with maintenance of the gardens
Preparing signage for vegetable plots
Co-ordinating activity with fellow volunteers
Helping all visitors to learn about and benefit from the gardens

Volunteering at the One Community Grocery Co-op Produce Pop-Ups is a vital opportunity to contribute to the health and well-being of our community. These pop-up events serve as mobile markets, providing fresh, locally sourced produce to neighborhoods with limited access to healthy food options. By volunteering, you play a key role in ensuring that everyone in our community has access to nutritious food, fostering a sense of community, and promoting sustainable living.

Why It’s Important:

Food Accessibility: Many areas in our community are food deserts, where residents have limited access to affordable and nutritious food. By volunteering at our produce pop-ups, you help bridge this gap, making fresh fruits and vegetables readily available to those who need them most.

Health and Nutrition: Access to fresh produce is crucial for maintaining a healthy diet and preventing chronic diseases. Your involvement helps educate community members about the importance of healthy eating and provides them with the resources to make better food choices.

Community Building: These events are more than just markets; they are gathering places where neighbors can connect, share stories, and support each other. Volunteering at the produce pop-ups fosters a strong sense of community and solidarity, strengthening the bonds between residents.

Sustainability: Promoting locally sourced produce supports local farmers and reduces the environmental impact associated with long-distance food transportation. Your participation helps advocate for sustainable food systems and environmental stewardship.

Empowerment and Education: Volunteering provides an opportunity to educate community members about food systems, nutrition, and sustainability. It also empowers individuals to take control of their health and well-being through informed food choices.

By volunteering at the One Community Grocery Co-op Produce Pop-Ups, you are making a direct and positive impact on your community. Your contribution helps create a healthier, more connected, and sustainable environment for all.

Join us in this important mission and help us build a stronger, healthier community together!
