Join Our Documentary Storytelling Volunteer Expedition in Guatemala

Overview:
Embark on a transformative 10-day volunteer expedition in Guatemala, where you will engage directly in community-based storytelling projects that amplify the voices and initiatives of indigenous Maya communities. This is not just a trip; it's an opportunity to make a meaningful impact while developing your documentary filmmaking and photography skills under the guidance of experienced impact-driven storytellers.

Volunteer Impact:
Participants will collaborate with local leaders and changemakers engaged in crucial conservation and community empowerment efforts. Your contributions will support sustainable development initiatives focused on land stewardship, resource management, and the promotion of indigenous rights. This hands-on experience not only aids local communities but also produces valuable documentary content that can influence global perceptions and actions towards these critical issues.

Training and Mentorship:
Volunteers will receive professional training and mentorship from seasoned filmmakers and photographers. Choose to be part of a video, photo, or producing team and gain practical experience that will elevate your ability to tell powerful stories. An on-site Actuality producer will provide ongoing guidance, ensuring your work contributes effectively to the community's goals and your personal learning objectives.

Cultural Immersion:
Travel through the lush jungles of Petén, visit the historic Mayan ruins of Tikal, and immerse yourself in the rich Maya culture. By living and working alongside indigenous communities, volunteers gain a deeper understanding of the local traditions, challenges, and aspirations, enriching the storytelling process with authenticity and respect.

Production and Collaboration:
Produce at least three different storytelling projects in collaboration with your team and local partners. These projects, which can be in video, photo, or audio format, will not only enhance your portfolio but may also be showcased in international festivals and public exhibitions, further extending the impact of your volunteer work.

Each year we study otters in Marin County, Ca, where they are a recovering species (they were gone for decades and came back when conditions improved). Volunteers are trained, then go out in the field to selected sites on public land, where they maintain our cameras, document their findings (videos), once a week from June through October. This involves walking, sometimes along rough trails, and reasonable fitness. The most fun part about it is reviewing the videos, which often include otters, bobcats, coyotes, badgers, many types of birds, snakes, and other beautiful wildlife.

The WaterFront Center is hosting a beach clean-up Friday April 26 from 3-4pm to celebrate Earth Day and prepare for spring mating season. Every year, hundreds of horseshoe crabs and diamondback terrapins come to our beach to mate and lay their eggs. Various bird species also have their babies in the pond and bay by our center. In cleaning the beach, we are providing a safe area for animals to raise their young and keep the local ecosystem balanced. This cleanup will be done in partnership with Musicares. All are welcome to join us!

We run corporate volunteer groups in our Tallaght hub on Tuesdays between 10 am and 2 pm.

Our main activities are sorting and packing up clothes, nappies, essentials and gift packs; as well as organising buggies and cots for the families we deliver to that week. We help up to 20 families each week and need enthusiastic volunteers to help us prepare mama and baby items.

If you would like to make a real difference for families in need and have some fun in the process (coffee, tea and biscuits are provided), please get in touch with us!

Where possible, we recommend a suggested donation of €25 per participant who comes to our hub, to cover our costs and support our mission. This can be covered by donations of baby items brought with you on the day or by a cash or online donation.
For the list of items needed, or to donate online, please see https://communityconnect.ie/corpvol/

The Associazione Banco Alimentare della Toscana (Tuscany’s regional food bank), which is part of the larger Italian national network of the “Fondazione Banco Alimentare”, provides nutritional support to those in need. Its mission is best expressed by the motto "combat waste and combat hunger". The important work carried out by the Banco Alimentare benefits four key areas:

Social: perfectly good food, which may otherwise be discarded, is gathered via different channels and given a "second life" by the redistribution to 550 accredited charitable organizations which, in turn, reallocates the food items, at no cost, to over 125,000 disadvantaged individuals throughout the region.

Economical: the redistribution of good food adds new economic value.

Environmental: the recovery of food avoids its waste, leading to savings in energy resources as well as the recycling of packaging.

Educational: since its origins, “in sharing community needs, the meaning of life is shared" has been at the center of the Banco’s actions.

The Banco Alimentare warmly invites company employees to join the Banco’s team as active volunteers to assist with the unpacking, sorting and repacking of food items arriving and/or departing from its warehouse. Participating volunteers can provide their service for either full or half days (mornings only) during company hours from Monday through Friday. The Banco’s warehouse is headquartered c/o Centro Alimentare Polivalente in Piazza Artom 12, Florence.
