Tree guards are used when the trees are first planted to aid growth and protect from herbivores, but when the trees are older they can cause harm to both the trees and the wildlife in the woodland, so they need to be removed. Come and spend a day helping us remove these guards from our older woodlands.

Scrub clearance involved cutting down shrubs and small trees and burning the cuttings. This is done to create a varied age structure within the habitat and provided areas of bare ground essential for wildflowers, invertebrates and reptiles.

Join us on Sunday, December 3 (rain or shine!), as we transform the streets of South Los Angeles from Leimert Park to Historic South Central into a public park for the day. CicLAvia creates free, family-friendly events that transform streets into safe spaces for the community to enjoy by foot, bike, and other forms of people- powered transport. Our routes are welcoming to people of all ages and abilities!

Volunteers help create a fun and safe environment for participants. Duties include:
• Provide event information to CicLAvia participants
• Ask participants to dismount, slow down, or follow other traffic instructions
• Sign participants up to CicLAvia’s mailing list and free drawing and conduct Metro's Open Streets survey
• Assist Hub Staff with hub setup, breakdown, and maintenance

• Groups: Stop or slow down participants at car crossing intersections and slow zones*

Why do we install cages and blue tubes to just have to return and remove them? Young saplings are fragile and there are many things that can damage or kill them after plantings. Blue tubes protect the trunks from being eaten by voles and ensure that maintenance crews don’t accidentally cut or mow over them. Cages keep deer and beavers from eating and gnawing on newly installed maples and cedars. Even once they are big and tall, some trees need cages throughout their lives due to high beaver activity in certain areas. These materials help increase the success and survival rate of restoration projects. Now that many of our sites are reaching over 5, 10, and 20 years old, it’s time to return and provide some upkeep.

Meet at NSEA’s campus by 10 am and your group leader will shuttle everyone to the site. You can expect to be back to NSEA at 2 pm. All materials and tools needed will be provided, all you need to bring is weather-appropriate clothes, sturdy shoes, and a water bottle! Restrooms at NSEA will be available before the shuttle leaves and once you return.

Since space is limited, registration is required. With the carpool, we ask that you only sign up if you can stay for the whole time. Any volunteers under 18 years of age need to bring a completed Youth Liability Form, and anyone under 14 must also be accompanied by an adult.
