Plant trees along Terrell Creek to support salmon, birds, and shellfish in Birch Bay!Native trees and shrubs are critical in creek restoration because they provide shade, erosion control, and pollutant filtering. More about The Yard: The Yard is NYC’s only adventure playground and located on Governors Island. An adventure playground is a place dedicated to play, where young people have ownership over how the space is built, altered, and enhanced. An adventure playground is a child-led zone, where children can play, supported by trained playworkers. At The Yard, children play outdoors, rain or shine; they can build and decorate forts, dig, connect with nature, play instruments, splash, paint, ride bikes, imagine, explore, create, re-use, and so much more. I’m attaching pictures here. It might look like a junkyard; it is filled with materials, usually removed from the waste stream, over which children have complete control. With no rubber or asphalt on the ground, The Yard can also take in rain water and protect our waterways; it is a case study for our children’s play can participate in a greener future.Volunteering opportunity: We are looking for volunteers to come and pack up The Yard for the winter (it will reopen in Spring 2026). Volunteers will be asked to deconstruct children’s forts (tools will be provided), move lumber, pack and organize toys, organize tools, and other tasks. Volunteers will begin the adventure by taking the (free) ferry in lower Manhattan to the island, and walk 5 minutes to The Yard, where our team will organize the work. This is all outdoors! And it would make a huge difference for our tiny nonprofit.
