Volunteering with The Hartford will help to maintain Riverfront Recapture's four parks through weeding, pruning, autumn clean-up of flower beds and trails. Volunteer service keeps our parks fresh and visibly appealing to our many park visitors, as well as enhancing the environment.

Please dress as you would to work in your own yard. No open-toed shoes. All tools provided. Although working gloves are also available, volunteers often prefer to bring their own gardening gloves from home. Drinking water is provided for all volunteers.

The Postcode Meerkat Wide Area Surveillance System (WASS), is a truly game-changing tool in the anti-poaching arsenal of South African National Parks (SANParks). Its unique combination of sensors allows poachers to be identified, tracked and interdicted at will. Thus tipping the balance in favour of the anti-poaching rangers who are now able to take a proactive, rather than reactive, approach to operations.

In 2017 Veterans for Wildlife entered into a partnership with SANParks and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in order to support the operational deployment of the Meerkat. This was further entrenched with a wrap-around agreement between Veterans for Wildlife and the Peace Parks Foundation (PPF).

This critical piece of equipment requires skilled and experienced individuals in order to keep it functioning at optimal performance - thereby continuing to support the rangers in the field when they need it most. And this is where Veterans for Wildlife comes into play. Our volunteers, drawn from niche fields, deploy into the field in order to operate the Meerkat and fulfill a critical function in the intelligence cycle.

With the Meerkat continuing to prove itself, day-in-and-day-out, Veterans for Wildlife’s support role will likely grow as the programme itself expands exponentially. Our dedicated Project Coordinator has a full-time responsibility to develop this role as well as provide continuity for our volunteers and partners from one deployment to the next.

If you come from an Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR), Signals, Engineer or Gunnery background we would be very interested in talking to you. Contact us today and contribute to the deployment of the most advanced anti-poaching operation in South Africa.

Before we set out on our clean-up, enjoy a guided interpretive walk through the park and teach you a thing or two about different kinds of plants. We will focus on invasive vs. non-invasive, as well as native and non-native plants.

Thursday mornings are dedicated to park maintenance at Oxbow Park in Reno, NV. This may involve anything from picking up trash, covering up unwanted writing, and as you may have guessed based on the name, a huge chunk of clean up is pulling out unwanted, invasive, and non-native weeds. This will help native plant life take back their natural habitat.

Summer is a time when so many people will discover and utilize the Oxbow Nature Study Area, and it is important to provide the most natural and enjoyable environment for all plants, animals, and people. So join us Thursday morning, 07/05!

All ages welcome!
