From sheep to skein, learn (or share your expertise) to pick, wash, card, dye, spin, knit, and crochet heritage wool. We sew colonial clothing too! Stitch 'n Time is a volunteer based textiles club where members enjoy learning about the cultivation of wool and cotton, and colonial textiles. Each meeting is themed, and will focus on a particular task or step in the processing of wool from the foundation's Hog Island sheep flock.

Hog Island sheep are a critically endangered breed of sheep with less than 200 sheep born in the U.S. each year. Products produced by the Stitch 'n Time club are sold to support the foundation's Heritage Breed conservation program. Volunteers are expected to regularly attend monthly meetings and contribute to fiber processing to the best of their abilities.

If you have a passion for people, your community and the conservation and stewardship of Santa Barbara’s local coastal waters and watersheds, then the Sea Center wants you! We are currently seeking volunteers interested in inspiring others to appreciate the amazing habitats and creatures that live in the Santa Barbara Channel. We wouldn’t be able to provide hands-on, ocean science education without the help of our dedicated volunteers, who assist in all areas of the Sea Center’s programs. The Sea Center is open from 10:00–5:00 PM seven days a week and is very accommodating with volunteers schedules.

All new Sea Crew Volunteers begin as Exhibit Interpreters who meet, greet, and educate visitors during public visiting hours and from time to time assist with special events.

To find out what the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center is all about and how to get involved, please contact the Volunteer Manager at scvolunteermanager@sbnature2.org
Volunteering at the Sea Center is a rewarding experience, with ongoing opportunities to learn more about our local marine life, meet new people, and promote the conservation of our oceans!

More than 250 million tons of plastic are estimated to make its way into our ocean by 2025. The environmental damage caused by plastic debris alone is estimated at US$13 billion a year. The AWARE flagship program, Dive Against Debris, improves the health of ocean ecosystems through local action while providing valuable information about underwater debris to help inform policy change for global impact. Divers are often the first to witness human impact on the marine environment and are uniquely positioned to help report, remove and advocate to stop marine debris at its source.

Since the program launched in 2011, divers have aided over 35,000 entangled marine animals and reported more than 2.4 million pieces of marine debris to inform groundbreaking research that is helping to create healthier oceans.
