Whether you are co-workers looking to get out of the office or a school group looking for service hours, we’d love to welcome you to volunteer at Schlitz Audubon.

Our primary group volunteer opportunity is working outdoors restoring and improving natural habitat. Volunteers work with our Land Management team to maintain our beautiful 185-acre nature preserve.

Tasks vary depending on the conservation priorities at the Center and the time of year. Your group will most likely assist by removing invasive plant species. Other potential projects include planting seedlings, trees, or shrubs or performing trail maintenance.

IMPORTANCE OF INVASIVE PLANT REMOVAL
Invasive species wreak havoc on native food webs and alter habitats causing displacement of native plants and animals. Invasive plants and animals also disrupt valuable ecosystem services, causing economic harm and impacting human health. By removing invasive species, such as common buckthorn, dame’s rocket and garlic mustard, your volunteer group will support our conservation work at Schlitz Audubon, encourage native plants to thrive, and allow ecosystem services to properly function.

LEARN AS YOU VOLUNTEER
We like to make your time at the Center an educational experience as well! As you conduct your land stewardship activity, our Land Manager would be happy to share more information about our conservation efforts, identify native or invasive plants, and answer any questions you may have about the importance of your support.

WHEN TO VOLUNTEER AND OTHER DETAILS
Land Steward Volunteers are at the Center on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, or Saturdays from 9:00am – 12:00pm. You are welcome to join one of these sessions or to book your own private group session from 1:00pm – 4:00pm. Tuesday and Thursday work sessions can also be arranged pending availability.

Outdoor land stewardship requires some bending, squatting, twisting, and lifting. Volunteers are asked to dress for the weather and to wear long pants and sturdy shoes/boots. Clothes and shoes worn are likely to get dirty, and possibly wet.

Interested in scheduling a time to volunteer or have questions? Click the "Inquire About Group Volunteering" button to fill out the form at the bottom of this webpage: https://www.schlitzaudubon.org/get-involved/volunteer/group-volunteer-opportunities-schlitz-audubon-nature-center/

Come and join KCGB during the 2024 Great American Cleanup at Matheson Hammock Park on Saturday, Apr. 6, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. During this event, volunteers will be "plogging" throughout the mangrove trails, removing any litter and preventing it from re-entering the ocean.

Plogging is a combination of jogging and plocka upp, Swedish for “to pick up.” Plogging entails jogging and picking up trash while you go. This event is at your own pace, whether that is walking, jogging, or running.

Please bring a reusable water bottle, hat, and sunblock. A water cooler will be available at the site for refills.

Goal/Purpose:
Join us in an enriching opportunity to contribute to the conservation efforts of our local environmental charity, Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas. Our primary objective is to conduct a residential canvassing campaign aimed at raising funds and collecting bottles for recycling. The funds generated will be directly channeled towards supporting the local community at the afforestation areas and enhancing the biodiversity of the two afforestation areas in Saskatoon namely Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area and George Genereux Urban Regional Park. It will also provide capacity to maintain the GPS prairie forest guide app. In addition to our primary goal of conducting door-to-door canvassing campaigns to support the Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, our organization actively seeks opportunities to enhance our capacity and expand our reach such as training sessions or networking events. By participating in this campaign, you will play a vital role in safeguarding our natural heritage while fostering sustainable practices within our community.

Why it's Important:
The success of our door-to-door canvassing campaign is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it provides essential financial support for the ongoing initiatives of Friends of the Saskatoon Afforestation Areas, enabling us to carry out vital conservation projects and maintain the integrity of our local ecosystems. Additionally, by collecting bottles for recycling, we actively contribute to reducing environmental pollution and promoting sustainable waste management practices. Furthermore, engaging in direct community outreach fosters awareness and appreciation for our natural surroundings, encouraging a sense of responsibility and stewardship among residents towards our environment.

Time Commitment:
Volunteers are needed intermittently throughout the spring and summer seasons to participate in group canvassing activities.

Benefits:

Support an organization making a tangible difference in the community.
Witness immediate results of your efforts through the collection of funds and bottles for recycling.
Receive comprehensive training on the organization and its campaign strategies.
Engage with your neighborhood, fostering community connections, and developing interpersonal skills.
Enhance communication, reliability, and trustworthiness through active participation.
Develop valuable competencies in public speaking, client service, and problem-solving.

Competencies Developed:

Public speaking and presentation skills
Client service and public relations
Adaptability and problem-solving
Community knowledge and awareness

Requirements:
Volunteers must possess strong communication skills, friendliness, reliability, and trustworthiness. Additionally, a basic understanding of community outreach principles and awareness of environmental issues is preferred.

Related Skills:
This volunteer opportunity offers valuable experience for individuals with backgrounds or interests in advertising, marketing, public relations, as well as those in managerial roles within insurance, real estate, financial brokerage, retail sales, and trade.

Join us in making a positive impact on our community and connecting with like-minded individuals dedicated to environmental conservation. Together, we can create a sustainable future for Saskatoon and its surrounding areas.
