The Lynden land team is kicking off 2025 by launching a new series of Wednesday Work Days, a weekly volunteer opportunity on the grounds. Whether you are looking for a few hours of volunteer work or want a weekly activity that keeps you outside, you are welcome to join us on Wednesday mornings from 10 am to 12 noon. Projects vary from season to season; for the next few months, you will work alongside land staff to pull herbaceous invasive species in our natural areas, as well as help accomplish other projects around the grounds to enhance biodiversity and take care of the native flora and fauna. No experience is necessary, though you are encouraged to bring your favorite gardening gloves and digging tools if you have them. Water, snacks, and additional tools will be provided.

Advance registration encouraged:

Empower women farmers worldwide with critical knowledge about sustainable water management—right from your desk! Join Audiopedia Foundation as a virtual volunteer translator and proofreader. Your language skills will transform essential resources on sustainable water use, irrigation, sanitation, and hygiene into freely accessible audio content, directly benefiting women in agricultural communities vulnerable to climate change.

Audiopedia's mission is to provide underserved communities with life-saving knowledge through freely accessible audio content in their mother tongues—often the only effective way to reach women who can't read or have limited literacy skills. In the Global South, women make up nearly half of the agricultural workforce, and in many regions, this proportion rises to 60–80%. By equipping these women farmers with accurate information about sustainable water practices, you directly help families adapt to climate challenges, boost agricultural productivity, and protect community health. We’re currently translating and proofreading content into over 100 languages—from Amharic to Zulu—and your language skills are surely among those we urgently need!

Each translation and proofreading task is concise (approx. 15-30 minutes), clearly defined, and provides immediate, tangible social impact by enhancing water sustainability, climate resilience, agricultural yields, and women's empowerment.

Ideal for sustainability advocates, agricultural experts, environmentalists, climate activists, or anyone passionate about empowering women farmers and promoting climate-resilient agriculture worldwide.

Why volunteer?

🌏 Global Impact: Your translations and proofreading directly help agricultural communities adapt to climate change.
📌 Skills-Based & Flexible: Virtual, short-term tasks manageable at your convenience.
💖 Immediate Impact: Your efforts empower women farmers, enhance food security, protect water resources, and build resilient communities.

Become a Water Management Champion today—your words can empower women farmers and help communities thrive sustainably!

This is an amazing opportunity to learn more about gardening and work with other Kubota Garden lovers. Kubota Garden Foundation (KGF) coordinates 2 garden maintenance work parties throughout the week. During each of these work parties, volunteers work in partnership with Seattle Parks and Recreation gardeners and KGF staff to weed, mulch, and prune garden beds.

At the start of a shift, volunteers will sign in at the gardener’s staff building (aka “crew quarters”). Gardeners will then instruct volunteers on the day’s task and procedures. From there, volunteers will head to the garden and work for 2 hours before returning to crew quarters to sign out at the end of the shift. All tools are provided. Please bring clothes you are okay getting dirty, gardening gloves if you have them, and water.

We'd love to welcome you to volunteer at Schlitz Audubon.

Our primary volunteer opportunity is working outdoors restoring and improving the natural habitat. Volunteers work with the Land Management team to maintain our 185-acre nature preserve.

Tasks vary depending on the conservation priorities at the Center and the weather conditions. Your group will most likely assist by removing invasive plant species. Other potential projects include planting seedlings, trees, or shrubs or performing trail maintenance.

IMPORTANCE OF INVASIVE PLANT REMOVAL
Invasive species wreak havoc on native food webs and alter habitats causing displacement of native plants and animals. Invasive plants and animals also disrupt valuable ecosystem services, causing economic harm and impacting human health. By removing invasive species, such as dame’s rocket and garlic mustard, your volunteer group will support our conservation work at Schlitz Audubon, encourage native plants to thrive, and allow ecosystem services to properly function.

LEARN AS YOU VOLUNTEER
We like to make your time at the Center an educational experience as well! As you conduct your land stewardship activity, our Resource Ecologists would be happy to share more information about our conservation efforts, identify native or invasive plants, and answer any questions you may have about the importance of your support.

WHEN TO VOLUNTEER AND OTHER DETAILS
Land Steward Volunteers are at the Center on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, or Saturdays from 9:00am – 12:00pm. You are welcome to join one of these sessions or to book your own private group session from 1:00pm – 4:00pm. Tuesday and Thursday work sessions can also be arranged pending availability.

Outdoor land stewardship requires some bending, squatting, twisting, and lifting. Volunteers are asked to dress for the weather and to wear long pants and sturdy shoes/boots. Clothes and shoes worn are likely to get dirty, and possibly wet.
