Forest Fire Risk Prevention Derivatives in Northern California
Bobby Fishkin, lead author

In 2018, Sacramento was named the ""the Most Polluted City on Earth"" due to ""smoke from Camp Fire,"" This proposal aims to prevent that from happening again through adopting a systemic approach and collaborating with stakeholders to actively prevent future such events. The insurance industry, along with institutional chief risk officers, have begun to recognize the importance of moving from ""loss compensation to loss prevention.""

CrowdDoing and Project Heather propose launching a prevention derivative with two new stakeholders: (a) contingent payers who pay in proportion to the reduction in risk, and (b) impact investors who finance social innovations in which their return is similarly proportional to the reduction in risk. It will build on existing precedents for contingent contracts involving social- innovation-based risk prevention.

A spectrum of forest fire risk prevention approaches are available: from creative new social innovations to well-established interventions. The forest fire risk prevention derivative would first survey existing forest fire prevention interventions in Greater Sacramento with an eye towards which ones might be suitable to support and expand. It would then review global social innovations that might be relevant to Northern California to determine which to replicate. Entities involved in risk management and risk securitisation, from insurers to reinsurers to retrocessionaires, ought to welcome the chance to share liability proportionally through a commons of prevention innovations. The prevention derivative can expand as more institutions and individuals join as contingent payers and impact investors in order prevent a larger portion of collective risk. Payments by private and public institutions to support prevention derivatives can be in-kind, through services, and/or financial.

It's that time of year to bring together friends and do some volunCAREing at the community learning garden at the Bloomshire of Gloucester. This is an opportunity to gather with a few of your coworkers for just about an hour and help prepare the garden for the winter season. Tasks are simple like gathering lightweight drip irrigation lines and putting them into storage.

We call it volunCAREing because as a community we join in a common good effort to care for the land, share in active cooperation, and celebrate the value of locally produced whole foods.

No experience is necessary. Just bring a smile, an eagerness to learn a little something new about the land and your phone (in case you want to take a selfie or two). Dress appropriately for lite outdoor activities.

The learning garden is a place where families, students and others can come and actively learn healthy food skills and community cooperation. We're committed to helping people in our local area gain and give value through fresh food. Funds raised from this volunteer opportunity will help with our 2019 and 2020 learning garden budgets.

We'll finish with fresh watermelon harvested directly from the garden and there will be some hot apple cider to sip while you chat with friends in the great outdoors.

Thanks for being part of the food learning community and helping make life better in Hampton Roads.

We will be removing invasive Himalayan blackberry from our Mount Rainier Gateway Protected Area. Himalayan blackberry is a nasty invasive that can quickly out-compete native vegetation and prevent it from growing. It's important that we work to control the blackberry so our forests can thrive! We don't get to go to our Mount Rainier sites often, so don't miss out on this opportunity to explore the watershed!

We will be working for 3 hours, please dress appropriately for the weather.

Eadha is undertaking an exciting 3 year project to restock felled areas of commercial conifers within a large former industrial site in Renfrewshire to create new productive amenity woodland as part of a proposed public Woodland Park which will become a new greenspace for the expanding settlement of Bishopton nearby and for the wider Glasgow area. Nearby Eadha maintains a specialist tree nursery conserving rare native species including aspen which is locally threatened and nationally rare. The nursery hosts the national collection of aspen. We will be planting aspen in trials on the site as well as in mixed woodland with a range of other species. The area is rich in wildlife including regionally important populations of otters, badgers and owls, as well being home to fascinating industrial heritage.
