DESCRIPTION: Did you know that the polar region is warming about three times faster than the global average? Walruses depend on sea ice for survival, which is causing them to face challenges resulting from limited food availability, and from increasing disturbances caused by shipping traffic and industrial development as the Arctic becomes more accessible to such activities when sea ice is lost.Walrus are facing the reality of climate change, but you can help by contributing to citizen science as a Walrus Detective! With just a computer, volunteers can help search for walrus in approximately 800,000 satellite images taken from space and help support a WWF and British Antarctic Survey (BAS) project that aims to carry out the first ever whole population census of Atlantic and Laptev walrus over five years. This information will help scientists understand the impact of climate change on populations of this iconic species and help safeguard their future.
With WWF's Walrus from Space guide (found here: https://worldwildlifefund-my.sharepoint.com/personal/cheron_carlson_wwfus_org/_layouts/15/guestaccess.aspx?share=Ec6ykGyj40pFhnJu-ZTWOtIBWA6-4Y7cyIFBlOdlJXV7Tg&e=je9Jp4), you will have all that they need to get started with this project (plus access to a special introductory video with WWF’s lead scientist working on this project!) With a minimum group size of 75 volunteers, WWF can turn this into a facilitated event that will include a virtual introductory presentation about the Walrus from Space program, a live showing of the program overview video, and a walk through of the registration/training process. Following the virtual webinar, volunteers will register on the platform and complete a brief training and then they will be on their way to helping to analyze satellite imagery to notate the presence of walrus or other wildlife across the Arctic.
PARTICIPANTS - If you would like to accompany your event with a webinar hosted by a WWF representative, we ask for a minimum of 75 participants. For a self-facilitated event, there is no minimum for this project and the maximum depends on logistics and materials.
LOCATION - As a WWF-facilitated event, this will be a virtual opportunity. As a self-facilitated event, this opportunity could be completed as a virtual or in-person event. Either way, this event requires each volunteer to have access to a computer.
FACILITATION - Available as a WWF-facilitated event or as a self-facilitated event led by an employee lead with guidance from WWF's Walrus from Space guide.
DURATION - Whether this event is facilitated or not, it will last approximately 30-90 minutes.
FUNDING REQUIRED - Whether this event is facilitated or not, no funding is required.

DESCRIPTION: Using just their phones, volunteers can contribute to a citizen science project that allows individuals to collect information for a global database that helps scientists monitor species populations, geographic distribution, and seasonal/migration patterns. Volunteers will simply download iNaturalist’s Seek app – a collaboration between WWF, iNaturalist, National Geographic Society, and others – and identify species using their mobile device’s camera. Once volunteers register, the images they take are uploaded to a global database that helps scientists track changes in populations and identify trends, to better understand how species are adapting to climate change, and ultimately, how those changes impact all of us.With a minimum group size of 75 volunteers, this opportunity could be turned into a WWF-Facilitated event featuring a virtual webinar. This webinar will provide an overview of biodiversity and the importance of protecting it, as well as details on how to use the Seek app, and guidance on how to acquire badges. This opportunity can also be self-facilitated by employee leads, using guidance from our Biodiversity Scavenger Hunt guide that can be found here: https://worldwildlifefund-my.sharepoint.com/personal/cheron_carlson_wwfus_org/_layouts/15/guestaccess.aspx?share=EX8KcznKvd1GjLeVYEUdrPUBkjcB-7QyfYXxf7f_qZ-LNQ&e=jSMQkY

The International Coastal Cleanup began more than 30 years ago when communities rallied together to collect and document the trash littering their coastline. GreenSpace Water Alliance (GWA) invites you to join in for this year's cleanup to help remove trash and debris from the shorelines of the Indian River Lagoon. The event is FREE to participate in. The supplies for this event are allocated for each site based on registrations, so it is very important for you to register.
Every year this event engages people to remove trash from shorelines, lakes, rivers, and beaches around the world, identifying the sources of debris and changing behaviors.
No matter where you live—whether on the coast or thousands of miles away—all waterways lead to the ocean. If we take action and work together, we can improve the ocean’s health and make trash-free seas a reality.
