This regional day of action aims to improve conditions for the critically endangered Southern Resident Orca Whales. Join the Whatcom Conservation District, Whatcom Land Trust, and the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association along California Creek to do just that! You can plant native shrubs and trees with us along California Creek to improve salmon habitat. Salmon are the main food source for the Southern Resident Orcas. Registration is encouraged. Help NSEA upgrade our Native Plant Nursery and prepare for the fall planting season! To kick off the 2023 fall season, we invite you to join us on our campus to help maintain and improve our nursery where over 10,000 trees and shrubs are housed before they are planted along salmon bearing streams. Would you like to build nonprofit board experience and make a difference in the City of Compton? The Compton Initiative has an opening available for a Capital Group associate to join the board of directors.

The nonprofit Compton Initiative partners with schools, churches, businesses, and community stakeholders to bring restoration and hope to the City of Compton, CA. We seek to empower residents and leaders to love the community together through thousands of acts of service that will help transform the city.

The opportunities of being a board member from Capital Group include:
1) Bringing your perspective to the vision, ideas and challenges presented to the organization
2) Contributing your advice and your vote in governing the resources entrusted to the board
3) Expanding your leadership and networking skills among community leaders and Capital Group associates

The board meets virtually six times per year in one-hour sessions. There are also occasional opportunities for offline projects done individually or in small teams as needs may arise.

In addition to participating in board meetings, board members are highly encouraged to contribute their time on quarterly workdays and organizational events like annual holiday celebrations.

As a Capital Group associate, you will be able to help organize associate volunteers for quarterly workdays and connect with Capital Cares to schedule activities and apply for annual grants.

Litter from roadways, beaches, boat ramps, and parks can negatively impact waterways and the ocean in Nassau County, FL, and specifically Amelia Island, FL. International Coastal Cleanup is one of our largest cleanup events of the year. Site captains provide supplies from 6 locations for residents and visitors to participate in a two-hour cleanup.

Opportunity Details

Many teams come to the sanctuary to help with projects around the animals. We are a busy working rescue and animals welfare organisation that combines their care and well-being with that of education and enrichment for humankind.
Volunteer teams help us with the initial daily care of the animals followed by a project that can range from clearing a pen, taking down a pig house and rebuilding one, repairing fencing, clearing ground, painting and maintenance along with re-bedding, pen maintenance, brushing and oiling the pigs. Depending on when you come, will determine the things that need doing, e.g. close to Christmas, it may be setting up the grotto and sleigh etc. Autumn, clearing leaves and rebuilding our hibernation area for hedgehogs, summer may be filling wallows and clearing pathways etc.

Youth Volunteer Corps of Hampton Roads is part of an international network of programs that offers youth (ages 11-18) the opportunity to gain skills and improve their world through volunteering. YVCHR mobilizes diverse groups of youth volunteers from across the community into teams to complete meaningful service-learning projects that address a variety of important needs across Hampton Roads. Team Leaders plan, recruit for, and facilitate service-learning projects for youth and represent the YVC program to schools, agencies and other YVC program partners. Adult volunteers who can commit to at least one project per month (evenings/weekends) and who wish to join our team are invited to email kmorgan@yvchr.org for an application. Prospective Team Leaders who have a particular interest or area of expertise may choose to facilitate projects in one strategic focus area or that address a particular need (animal welfare, environmental conservation, hunger, homelessness, community gardening, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications
● Be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED
● Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien
● Be available for a minimum of one project per month (evenings, Saturdays and school breaks)
● Have experience volunteering and working with youth
● Be outgoing, friendly and able to multitask
● Communicate well with people from a variety of backgrounds, including at-risk youth
● Have a passion for helping youth succeed
● Have basic computer knowledge
● Own a reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license
● Be willing to get hands dirty

Preferred Qualifications
● Excellent communication skills including public speaking
● Experience working with 11-18 year-old youth
● Knowledge of service-learning
● Familiarity with the nonprofit sector
