Volunteer with Sure We Can to learn from staff and community members about the day-to-day work of bottle and can collecting and sorting. Volunteers will participate in sorting materials that will then be recycled! No particular special skills are required, just a willingness to get a little dirty and to help us dig through the valuable materials that others throw away!

Sure We Can is a nonprofit recycling center, community space, and sustainability hub in Brooklyn, NY. Our mission is to serve independent recyclers, also known as “canners” - people who collect bottles and cans for 5-cents a piece to earn income through economic empowerment, social inclusion, and environmental awareness.

Fife House's Huntley Residence is a transitional housing program for vulnerable community members who are living with HIV/AIDS, and who have experienced chronic homelessness and housing insecurity.

Fife House invites BMO employees to volunteer to help create a tranquil oasis for residents at our Huntley Residence, as well as help beautify the building by planting up flowers and plants in container pots and decorating our back patio - a private communal space for our residents - and to help plant up the front garden of our building . Having a beautiful and welcoming back patio that is planted up with flowers, plants and lights will enable our clients to have a quiet place to enjoy the outdoors - which is important for their mental health and well-being. Also, by planting up the front garden, BMO employees will help make the residence a beautiful place they can temporarily call home with pride and dignity, and a garden that can also be enjoyed by our neighbours.

Volunteers would assist with one or both of the following activities:
(1) Cleaning the back patio, planting flowers and plants in containers/pots, build a pre-fabricated bench, and put up string lights
(2) Weeding the front garden, remediating the soil, and putting in fresh new plants and flowers.

Due to a myriad of reasons often connected to their HIV and health status, most of our residents/clients are not employed and/or living on ODSP. As such, many are living at or below the poverty line. Some are estranged from families. Food insecurity, isolation, and mental wellness are challenging issues they have to face on a daily basis. Programs and services provided by Fife House are aimed at helping residents to mitigate these issues.

Note: This volunteer activity will require lifting and medium-intensity manual labour (e.g. digging, planting).

Budget request: We would like to request funding support of approximately $1500 to cover the costs of purchasing materials for the volunteer activity (e.g. soil, flowers and plants, pots, gloves, water, snacks, lights, bench, gardening tools).

As the Chicago Botanic Garden’s urban agriculture program, Windy City Harvest is making a difference in communities on the West and South Sides of Chicago. By focusing on growing food, improving health, and creating job opportunities, we're helping build strong, vibrant neighborhoods that thrive.

Participants will dive into two hours of hands-on farm work at Rodeo Farm, one of our two production sites. The tasks will vary based on the season to reflect the dynamic nature of farming. In the spring, you’ll assist with preparing garden beds, moving compost, and engaging in seeding and composting activities. During the peak summer season, the work may include harvesting, weeding, watering, and planting. In the fall, participants will help clear beds and prepare for fall plantings and season extension to ensure continued growth into the cooler months. This immersive experience will connect you to the summer season of urban farming.
