Last year we had more than 200 items, and we hope to have an even grander event this year on September 16, 2023 from 6-11:45pm. We can’t do this without Volunteers! We need more than 100 volunteers to help set up before and the day of as well as helping at the event with check-in, decorating, monitoring the auction, and cleaning up/tearing down the night of and the day after.

In celebration of Earth Month, help NHM explore nature in L.A. by joining the annual City Nature Challenge from April 26 to April 29, 2024!

The City Nature Challenge is an international effort that mobilizes volunteers to find and document plants and wildlife in urban areas across the globe. It’s a friendly 4-day collaboration where cities participate to see who can make the most observations of nature, who can find the most species, and who can engage the most people.

Why Join?

There is nature all around us! Knowing what species are in our city and where they are helps us study and protect them, but the ONLY way to do that is by all of us – scientists, land managers, and the community – working together to find and document nature in our neighborhoods. Through your participation, not only do you learn more about your local nature, but you can also make your city a better place – for you and other species!

This opportunity is open to all ages and experience levels, and can be completed on participants’ own time between the Challenge dates. No additional registration needed.

How to Participate:

Step 1: Download the iNaturalist app from the App Store or Google Play and create a free account.

Step 2: Find wildlife anywhere in L.A. County (or your local area).

Step 3: Take photos of the WILD* plants and animals you find. (*If it's planted or taken care of by people it is not WILD.)

Step 4: Upload your observations to the iNaturalist app or webpage.

Step 5: Learn more as your finds get identified by scientists and naturalists.

Village Capital: Invitation to the Innovation for Ecosystem Restoration 2023 Program Investor Forum!

At Village Capital, we believe that the work of entrepreneurs solving urgent problems is vital to face the current world situation. For this reason, we fuel the growth of sustainable and impactful businesses by unlocking capital for early-stage entrepreneurs who are building emergent solutions for social, economic, and environmental challenges worldwide.

The Innovation for Ecosystem Restoration: Africa 2023 program will support 8-10 early-stage companies who are championing ecosystem restoration in sub-Saharan Africa to participate in 3 weeks of virtual workshops where they will have the opportunity to analyze their business from different perspectives and be better prepared to keep growing.

As the final part of the Village Capital investor discovery process (where teams are learning how to better understand the point of view of the investor) teams will now pitch investors. Instead of a large pitch event, Village Capital has found that small meetings allow for a more engaging and curated experience for both parties.
The goal of this session is for potential investors to be able to quickly meet companies that align with their investment objectives and to also help build the team’s experience with leading investor meetings.
If the investor is not aligned in stage/sector with the company, they should continue to give feedback/ask questions that a typical investor would ask in that meeting. Feedback should be focused on the business and the investment opportunity.

The session will follow this format:
-Introductions and Break into Small Groups: Each group will consist of two or more investors and two companies.
-Small Group Work: Each company will do a business pitch then get feedback from investors.
-Full Group Debrief.

Before the Session:
-Volunteers will receive a calendar invitation and a Investor Prep including information about the session and the companies before the session.
-The session will be held in English.

** Volunteers are welcome to participate in one or more program events.

These seed balls will help the farmers with 80% more success than planting normal seeds; also, seeds can be preserved for longer periods of time. After the seed balls are prepared, the Heifer Program Team will distribute the seed balls in areas impacted largely by climate change. Distribution of seedball will happen via self-help groups working in Bihar, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh.
Activity: Mix seeds and potting soil together. Add dry clay and mix again. Slowly add water while still mixing the seeds, potting soil, and water into a well-blended
paste. When you are able to form a ball of the blended material without it falling apart, you are
ready to stop mixing.
Benefits: A seed ball is a mixture of soil, clay, and seeds used to spread native plants.
Seed balls protect the seeds and keep them in one place until they receive enough water to grow, typically through rainfall. The clay and soil protect the seeds from heavy winds and the heat of the sun.
