Volunteers are an integral part of the NHCA, as we are largely volunteer run and would be unable to conduct most of our programming and events without the work of all our amazing volunteers. The work of our volunteers contribute to a stronger, more resilient community that is vibrant, diverse, inclusive and sustainable. Volunteers at Food Truck Frenzies will be running the membership table, set up with information about volunteering, programs, events and more. Volunteers will be selling memberships and interacting with community members to increase the positive presence of the NCHA and spread knowledge about what we do.

THE NATIONAL LAKE BLITZMay - September
The goal of the National Lake Blitz is to encourage the widespread monitoring of lakes across Canada using simple tools so participants can easily understand the impacts of climate change on freshwater lakes.
The Lake Blitz is open to everyone. To monitor a lake, participants don’t need a science/technical background or any formal training. Instead, all you need as a Lake Blitz volunteer is a smart device with a camera and a lake you care about.
What are the impacts on freshwater lakes that we’re concerned about?
- Wildlife - showcasing the biodiversity on lakes in Canada
- Invasive species spread that push out native species
- Algal blooms that decrease oxygen levels and can be toxic to humans and animals
As a volunteer, you will get the chance to take action to address the climate crisis by collecting simple yet crucial data on lake health. Lake Blitz volunteers will become part of a growing national network of water stewards who will meet regularly online to share results, ask questions and sit in on presentations from water experts from across Canada. At the end of the sampling season the data collected will be shared on a data map and publicly accessible water data websites. Volunteers can even win prizes!
Taking regular observations with photographs as a simple but effective way to understand freshwater ecosystem health.
As a Lake Blitz participant, you will help create a ‘snapshot’ of lake health by collecting observations at your chosen lake with shoreline photos and the colour of the water. Participants will be required to take photos between the months of May to September. You can participate as often as they’d like—weekly, monthly, or whenever inspiration strikes. The goal is to document changes in biodiversity over the monitoring season and create a snapshot of a lake’s ecological health.
Throughout the summer, the Lake Blitz Coordinator will provide tips and tricks on how to produce the most valuable data possible.
Becoming a Lake Blitz volunteer is an incredible learning opportunity! You will come away with a tremendous amount of new knowledge about the relationships between climate and water that you will be able to share with family and friends.
Visit lakeblitz.livinglakescanada.ca for more information and to register contact the Lake Blitz Program Coordinator at lakeblitz@livinglakescanada.ca

Athboy Tidy Towns has been persistently working to improve, protect and enhance ourtown. Since our formation in 2001, Athboy Tidy Towns has transformed many parts of
Athboy town and our accomplishments have been recognised with tributes and awards
including being named the overall winner of the Meath Pride of Place. While awards are
very pleasant to receive, our main focus is on what is beneficial to those who live, work
or pass through the town. As a result, most of our activities are the year round
maintenance of the improvements that we have achieved in the last 20+ years whilst
always looking to add to the town aesthetically, environmentally and historically where
we can. Athboy Tidy Towns aims to show the Athboy community that everyone can do
something and small changes do really make a difference.
Virtual projects would include:
Assistance with website upgrade (www.athboytidytowns.com) as website skills are basic for all members of Athboy Tidy Towns ("ATT").
In person projects would include:
Tree, bulb & seed planting in the Cowpark (a local community amenity that serves the people of Athboy, Co. Meath.)
Litter picking & cleaning of the main streets and areas of the town.
Weeding and general maintenance of established projects.
Painting of community and derelict buildings.
The opportunity would be to assist ATT with the daily activities that it undertakes. Getting a group of volunteers together to assist for a number of hours on one day would greatly help ATT with our ongoing projects and would massively benefit our town of Athboy. The volunteer group would be split into groups based on the preference that people have for each project/activity. Any assistance would greatly benefit the town of Athboy and would be reflected in the results achieved in the National SuperValu TidyTowns competition.
Location would be Athboy, Co. Meath.
Activity would be half a day (3 hours), volunteers could take part in a mix of the activities over the half day.
