18 Reasons shares our culinary skills and creativity with low-income communities
through Cooking Matters, a program offering free, 6-week-long series
of cooking and nutrition classes throughout the Bay Area. Each Cooking Matters class is taught by a Cooking Educator, Nutrition Educator, and Class Assistant working together in a team led by an 18 Reasons staff member. You don’t have to be a professional chef or nutritionist to volunteer with us – if you are passionate about healthy food and eager to share your skills and knowledge, we welcome you as a volunteer. This program is evidence-based and proven to help participants eat healthier, gain cooking skills and confidence, and spend more time cooking together with their families. It also reduces food insecurity among low-income families by 12% in just 6 weeks. Join us in changing people's lives through healthy, delicious cooking!

CLASS VOLUNTEER POSITION DESCRIPTIONS:

Cooking Educator

You are a cooking enthusiast! During class, you will lead highly participatory cooking lessons featuring simple, healthy recipes. You will demonstrate and practice basic cooking techniques and terminology, proper knife handling, and food safety and sanitation measures. You will work with the 18 Reasons staff coordinator and class participants to select recipes for class each week. The coordinator brings the food and cooking equipment.


Nutrition Educator

You do not have to be a professional nutritionist or dietitian to succeed in this role; you just need a love of healthy eating and an eagerness to help others. Some of our nutritionist volunteers do have a background in nutrition, food science, dietetics, or a related field, but it is not required. Class topics include using MyPlate as a tool for healthy eating, planning balanced meals, eating healthier fats, food budgeting, serving sizes, reading nutrition labels, and physical activity. The classes are intended to be interactive, and the nutrition educator facilitates open-minded conversation in class including using activities and visual aids that are provided by 18 Reasons.


Class Assistant

Class assistants primarily help instructors and facilitators with classroom set-up, food preparation, activities and clean up. Other duties may include packing groceries for participants to take home, unloading and loading kitchen equipment, and washing dishes. Many people volunteer as a class assistant for their first series.

TIME COMMITMENT:

Classes meet once a week for six weeks.
 Classes are held anytime between 9:00am and 8:00pm, Tuesday-Friday.
 Each week, the classes require a time commitment of two hours plus 30 minutes of prep time and up to 30 minutes of clean-up each week.
 In addition, communication with the Cooking Matters coordinator regarding class scheduling and the curriculum is expected. 
Volunteers are encouraged to contribute to all aspects of the class, including set-up, clean-up, and food preparation.

Opportunity Details

Riverfront Recapture's mission is to connect people with the Connecticut River. Access is through Riverfront's four parks along both banks of the Connecticut River in Hartford and East Hartford. Volunteer support in our parks is essential to keeping the parks beautiful and well-maintained. Projects range from weeding, mulching, planting, trimming, sweeping, painting, and more. The specific projects for September 11 will be selected approximately two weeks prior to the project date.

The KidsZone area of the show provides affordable wholesome entertainment for the entire family. Kids Zone provides a safe and stimulating environment for physically active children aged 12 and under to play and explore. Kids Zone’s volunteers provide manned activities while challenging them to reach, think, interact, explore, and have fun. Some activities include face painting, bean bag game, coloring, etc...

Opportunity Details

KNOX will hold a volunteer event to do a general clean-up of our site. This will include weeding our farm and herb garden and sprucing up our grounds. This event will support KNOX's urban incubator farm program, which provides beginning farmers with the land, training, and connections to scale up their production and launch their own farming businesses. Our farmers sell their produce at 5 farmers markets throughout the city, including our new Frog Hollow Farmers Market at KNOX! We can accommodate up to 20 volunteers for this event. Volunteers do not need to bring any tools. We recommend wearing sneakers, layers, and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Bathrooms are available in the KNOX building. We will provide light snacks and water for volunteers. If the event needs to be cancelled due to inclement weather, we will notify volunteers and reschedule.

We’re planting 100 new trees in the along the San Diego River in Santee… and you can be a part of it! Come get your hands dirty digging holes, planting trees, watering, and more.

This fun event is a great opportunity to make new friends, give back, learn about urban forests, and have a lasting effect on people and wildlife. By planting new trees in Walker Preserve you will be improving habitat for local animals and beautifying a local green space.

Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue (LOHR) is an ever-growing not for profit organization dedicated to both providing a sanctuary for unwanted, abused, and neglected horses, and improving the relationship between horses and people. Lucky Orphans is proud to be accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries as well as the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance as a promise to our best equine care standards. On Saturday, August 10, 2019, we will be celebrating our mission of “People Helping Horses Heal People.”

Aside from taking in horses, our programming offers instructional guidance and education in equine care, human development programs, and equine assisted psychotherapy. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy benefits not only our rescued horses but human clients suffering from PTSD, domestic violence, anxiety, depression, and other mental or emotional struggles.
