WaterAid’s Finance team is recruiting volunteers experienced in budget analysis, financial reporting and forecasting, and investment strategy to support us in strengthening the organization’s overall financial performance. Volunteers report to the CFO.WaterAid would welcome Volunteer support on the projects below and, accordingly, have designed these projects to be done either in stages or to completion.
I. Full cost recovery:
The challenge: WaterAid relies on significant, multi-year grants (“restricted income”) to fund its country programs. To ensure full costs of our programs are taken into account, WaterAid needs a method by which to allocate shared costs, while remaining compliant with federal and grantor-specific guidelines. Understanding the ‘gap’ between funded and un-funded program expenses is critical to the organization’s long-term financial health.
Drawing on established practices across the non-profit sector, the Volunteer is asked to select a model for full cost recovery from which WaterAid America can calculate, analyze and communicate the full cost of its programs.
Outputs: The Volunteer will be asked to evaluate available allocation models for full cost recovery, analyze organizational and program-level budgets and audited financial statements, and help WaterAid to determine the full cost of providing services.
Ideally, the Volunteer will produce a model to guide the allocation of shared costs such that the organization can demonstrate increased recovery via restricted grants, contracts and awards.
Stakeholders: In addition to the Finance team, the Volunteer will work with the Associate Directors of Operations and Grants & Compliance and the LAC Regional Representative. Spanish language proficiency is extremely helpful but not required.
II. Dashboard reporting and forecasting:
The challenge: WaterAid America has recently transitioned to new financial management software and is tasked with re-building and enhancing the suite of reports provided to its Board of Directors.
Outputs: The Volunteer will be asked to develop and produce a financial dashboard to report key performance indicators, is accessible to external users and easily maintained by the Finance Team. Using these indicators, the Volunteer will be asked to apply these indicators to the organization’s financial performance historically, in order to help us measure financial success and anticipate fiscal challenges.
Stakeholders: The Volunteer will work with all members of our small Finance Team as well as our senior management team, as is appropriate.
III. Financial vendors review
The challenge: WaterAid America is considering changing two major vendors: our primary banking institution and our benefit services broker. With our broker, WaterAid is considering moving to a PEO arrangement.
Outputs: The Volunteer will be asked to develop a cost/ benefit framework by which WaterAid can evaluate potential providers, identify risks and mitigation steps. The Volunteer will analyze the cost of current services, assess new potential vendors and use the framework to inform WaterAid’s decision-making process.
Stakeholders: The Volunteer will work with all members of our small Finance Team.
Timeline
The volunteer will work with the WaterAid America team to determine a suitable timeline for completion of the project.
Preferred skills
If you have good interpersonal skills, financial services experience, a proactive mindset and a passion for engaging a wider audience with WaterAid’s work, we would love to talk with you more about this volunteer position.

WaterAid’s Colombia Team is recruiting an exceptionally organized volunteer to help develop a financial plan and analysis for a participatory community water project in an underserved community in Colombia.WaterAid works in the department of La Guajira, an arid desert peninsula in northern Colombia and one of the least developed and most impoverished regions in the country. WaterAid focuses most of our work with the indigenous Wayuu people, who live in rural and marginalized communities where WASH statistics are comparable to or worse than parts of sub-Saharan Africa: 84% of the rural population lack access to clean water and 96% live without improved sanitation.
In a context of very low governmental presence in rural communities, due mostly to low capacity and high corruption levels, WaterAid works with Wayuu communities to manage and operate water systems autonomously, facilitating the organization of communities into Water Associations and providing technical training to ensure the solutions are sustainable and functional over time.
As our first community-managed micro-aqueduct has been in operation for the past 3 months, we see the urgent necessity of working together with the Water Association to analyze operational and management costs and build a financial plan that is adequate for the scale of the water system and the socioeconomic context of the communities it serves. Additionally, based on the recommendations resultant of this first exercise, we hope to develop a model for financial sustainability of community water systems for indigenous and rural communities in La Guajira and similar territories in Colombia.
Outputs
- Cost analysis for La Parcela community water system
- Financial plan to ensure long-term sustainability of the water system
- Recommendations for community-based water system financial planning and management model
Timeline
The volunteer will work with the WaterAid Colombia team to determine a suitable timeline for completion of the project.
Preferred skills
- Financial background with understanding of infrastructure projects
- Good knowledge of Spanish Language
- Knowledge or interest in Latin American policy and development
