Multiple 4-day long internships are available to assist in-field SRBTC partners during spring, summer and fall.

Interns must have a background in wildlife biology or fisheries and be engaged in a bachelors or masters program focusing on this work. Special consideration is available for unusual situations.

In some locations, eg Red Brook at The Lyman Reserve, lodging for 2 individuals may be available.

Work may include assisting with fisheries biologists in electrofishing and biological sampling, mapping, trail maintenance, habitat improvement and other work as directed by SRBTC partner. Specialty clothing required would include waders, outdoor clothing, sunblock, insect repellent.

Opportunity Details

Hidden Villa offers educational programs to casual visitors, families, and groups during the weekends. We are looking for volunteers to work with weekend staff and help guide farm tours, support educational programs, and volunteer as Ambassadors.

Typical Volunteer time frames are between 2 and 4 hours and can be coordinated with the Public Programs and Volunteer Departments.

Looking for an opportunity to help at our Food Rescue facility? Food Finders owes much of its continued success to our dedicated network of volunteers! Everyone who is involved, whether on a regular or occasional basis, has a role in reducing hunger and is essential to sustaining our program. As little as an hour of your time a month or week can make a huge difference. We have no age restriction, although kids under 16 must be joined by a parent or guardian.

We have an ongoing need for volunteers to help us sort and box non-perishable food/hygiene items we receive through our Food Drives and for our Food 4 Kids program.
You can even involve your children and make it a family volunteer activity OR as a team building activity for you and your employees.

During the school year, Food Finders’ provides boxes of non-perishable food items to 47 local Long Beach schools. This donated and purchased food, packed and delivered by a team of volunteers, provides enough for 4-6 meals per family over the weekend in an effort to bridge the hunger gap many children experience when school meals are not available. The program is supported by volunteers who pack the food boxes and deliver the boxes to the schools every Thursday and Friday during the school year.

It’s time again to tell everyone that TRASH IS NOT WELCOME in our river! Join us for the 7th Annual Great Saw Mill River Cleanup!

Be part of the group of volunteers (families, civic and youth groups, businesses) to join or lead cleanup crews, bagging tons of trash from streets, parks and streams, and connecting with neighbors and the outdoors.

Hearst Street site: This site is located along the South County Trailway between Hearst Street and Thompson St. This site is on the east side of the Saw Mill River Parkway. We will also be working on the west side of the Parkway, picking up garbage and freeing trees from vines along the river.

Working in our stunning four acres of protected woodland, we can offer teams of up to ten people the chance to maintain and plant our beautiful grounds for the benefit of our children. We rely on corporate volunteers to come in weekly from March to October to undertake the gardening as we do not have a permanent groundskeeper.

All we ask is that organisations cover the administration costs of the day through fundraising and/or help to buy any materials, such as plants that will be used on the day.

HackHW is the first ever hackathon organized by the students of Harvard Westlake high school in Studio City, California. Harvard Westlake is one of the best high schools in the nation for computer science. It has an amazingly comprehensive computer science curriculum and very talented computer science students. However, as high school computer scientists, many HW students lack coordinated opportunities, and the industry mentorship necessary to develop their skills outside of the classroom.

Hack HW is their solution to this problem. A small 50-student, 36 hour event, open to any Harvard-Westlake high school student, Hack HW not only encourages students to put their programming skills to practice, but also seeks to provide students, who may not have had the opportunity to try computer science, with an idea of what it means to enter the tech world.

To ensure that students are pursuing realistic projects and have the resources necessary to overcome programming and planning hurdles, this hackathon needs mentors with experience in entrepreneurship, iOS development, web development, or Arduino programming, 3D Printing, soldering and more throughout the event. That's where you come in. Volunteer your time for one or more shifts and help inspire our future leaders to create solutions with software/hardware hacking!

We welcome enthusiastic volunteers who can effectively educate the public about pedestrian safety and city walkability, build awareness for Vision Zero, the goal to end ALL serious and fatal traffic injuries by 2024, and Walk SF's various advocacy campaigns, as well as recruit new members at various fun events throughout the year like Walk to Work Day (April 9), Peak2Peak, Walk & Roll to School Day, Woonerven (the annual members party and fundraiser) and more.

Opportunity Details

The Culture, Arts, and Education (CAE) program is the most popular at the Garden, because it offers the most flexible shift times. Volunteer opportunities in this program include, assisting with gallery exhibitions and annual cultural festivals.

Exhibition Docents report to the Garden’s Exhibition Coordinator and orient and welcome visitors, provide short tours of exhibitions, maintain cleanliness in the gallery, and secure artworks from theft or damage. Interested parties should have a background in, or willingness to learn about, Japanese art, culture, history, and design. Mandatory docent orientations are offered before the start of each exhibition and a minimum volunteer commitment of 10 hours per year is required. Individuals must be 18 years old or older to apply to be a docent.

The Garden celebrates numerous Japanese cultural festivals throughout the year, including: Children’s Day, Tanabata, O-bon, and Moonviewing. Cultural festival volunteers assist the CAE team in making these events a success. They will be asked to greet visitors, assist with traditional arts and crafts, serve food and drinks, rove the Garden, and enforce Garden etiquette with attendees. The shift times are flexible. Weekday and weekend shifts are available. A minimum commitment of five hours per year is required.
