Come help feed hungry families and reduce food waste! Your help is needed to harvest crops on local area farms so that is can be eaten by hungry people rather than wasted.

Sometimes perfectly good produce is left behind in the fields, not to be harvested by the grower. Reasons why include:
-Crop grew better than anticipated and grower has excess
-Crop was damaged by the weather
-Crop doesn't meet industrial standards/ "ugly" "imperfect"

There is nothing wrong with this food but it is not economically sound for growers to harvest it. So they call upon Salem Harvest to bring out volunteers to harvest and distribute it throughout the community.

Harvesting is the main activity of Salem Harvest. Volunteers donate thousands of hours a year doing this. Harvesting opportunities occur weekly, both in the morning and evening hours, and on weekends. On average, 200 harvests are held during the months of June through December, harvesting 20+ varieties of produce.

We would LOVE to have you or your group join us in harvesting! For more information, please email Elise at elise@salemharvest.org -or- visit our website at salemharvest.org. Individuals can sign up and participate from the website and group opportunities can be arranged by contacting Elise.

Can't wait to see you in the fields!

The Annual Spring Clean Up at Camp Zanika Lache is Saturday, May 17, 2025 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are in need of volunteers that can help us get ready for summer camp. We have lots to do, such as get the archery range ready, the boats taken out of storage, clean the Kiwanis lodge, put up the wall tents, clean the kitchen, help prepare lunch, chop up firewood, gather debris, burn debris, rake leaves, and have fun at the same time.
Bring your gloves, rakes, chainsaws, loppers, and anything you think will come in handy!
Lunch will be provided! Dinner is provided Saturday night for anyone who spends the night on Saturday.
Volunteering at Camp Zanika is important because it allows us to keep our registration fees down and at the same time offer camp scholarships, or camperships, to kids that would not otherwise be able to afford to come and enjoy all that camp has to offer.
Lodging is available for anyone who would like to come up and spend the night on Friday night or stay Saturday night.
Projects include:
Re-staining kayak rack, fixing screen doors, repairing windows, clearing the archery field,
Installing bathroom partitions
Raking leaves (we did not get a chance to rake in the fall)
Split some wood (we will get the log splitter)
Fix our trails (we have some roots to cover up with dirt to prevent the kids from tripping)
Fixing some cabin stairs
Putting down new flooring in the director's cabin
Putting in a tub surround and new sink in the nurse’s cabin, so they have a shower.
Putting up the GaGa pit
Cleaning up the Challenge course area and if we have some extra money putting in a
new element to the course
Putting in the wood stove pipe in the camp director’s cabin

Donations are also accepted if you cannot come.

Volunteers will help young people test water samples from San Francisco Bay for pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and turbidity. Through these experiments, young people will learn about the importance of citizen science and the steps they can take to protect their local waterways. All volunteer training will be provided on site and no prior experience with the Water Challenge program is needed to participate.

The Ice Age Trail Alliance is a volunteer- and member-based nonprofit organization whose mission is to create, support, and protect a thousand-mile footpath tracing Ice Age formations across Wisconsin — the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. The Alliance has 19 volunteer chapters, including the Rock County Chapter.

Come volunteer with the Rock County Chapter along the Arbor Ridge segment of trail located within the Robert Cook Memorial Arboretum in Janesville. After a short hike into the work site, you’ll be trained on the techniques needed to maintain the trail’s tread, which involves removing plants and other material that have accumulated at the edge of the trail and reshaping the tread surface.

Bring with you a good attitude, work gloves, sturdy shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, water, and a snack.
