Do you like to sew? Do you have access to a sewing machine? Do you have some pre-loved fabric that you can repurpose to prevent it ending in landfil? If so, this is a great volunteering choice that we'd love you to help us with.

What's involved?
Download a sewing template from our website: https://finalstrawsolent.files.wordpress.com/2022/11/borrow-bag-instructions.pdf
Video sewing instructions here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtqotZsDSfE
Sew a bag / multiple bags and then post them back to us. Please note we cannot cover the cost of postage. If you are local to us we can try and arrange collection from you, or local drop-off if easier (email us to discuss this). Address for bags being returned by post: 36 Oak Tree Drive, Emsworth, Hampshire, PO10 7UJ, UK.

More info:
Final Straw Foundation’s Borrow Bag Scheme is a community-based engagement project that directly tackles the amount of single-use plastic bags used in towns and villages in the Solent region. The area is home to some beautiful stretches of coastline that are sadly often blighted by plastic pollution, including plastic bags. This scheme has 3 main aims. To reduce the amount of pre-loved fabric that ends up in landfill or being incinerated in the area, to minimise the number of plastic bags used in local towns and villages and to bring people together to work on a creative and sociable project.
The idea is simple. Local people make reusable fabric bags from material that would otherwise have ended up in our waste streams. This may include old curtains, duvet covers and other fabric remnants. These are cut according to a template and sewn into new, tough reusable bags. When we receive the bags back, we will sew a specific fabric logo on to the front to show they are part of the scheme. The bags are supplied to shops that have signed up to the scheme, and are then given out as an alternative to the customer taking a plastic bag. Fabric is saved from being thrown away, and plastic bags are no longer needed.
To date, volunteers involved in the Borrow Bag scheme have made a thousand borrow bags. The charity hopes that this number will double for 2023, aiming for approximately 2,000 bags to be made by individuals and across the groups, to be given out in local shops. Sessions will be run across Hampshire and West Sussex. Individual volunteers working on bags at home are based from Dorset to West Sussex, and we hope you would like to help us grow this remote element of this scheme.

Village Capital | Would you like to mentor our Innovation for Ecosystem Restoration 2023 cohort?

The Innovation for Ecosystem Restoration Africa 2023, supported by Moody's Corporation, is an accelerator program that will support 10 entrepreneurs promoting ecosystem restoration by addressing deforestation, land degradation, water scarcity, loss of biodiversity, and adverse climate change, which have emerged as some of the most pressing challenges facing sub-Saharan Africa.

ARTICULATING YOUR BUSINESS MODEL is a virtual session where mentors connect with startups on their business models and provide feedback on:
(1) whether companies have identified the correct key risks in their business models; and on
(2) a strategic challenge companies are facing related to sales, partnerships, or customer acquisition.

SUMMARY
Before you arrive, companies will have mapped their business models and laid out visually the participants on the supplier and customer sides of their model. This is a more free form representation of a business model than the business model canvas but should include many of the same key elements--suppliers, partners, distributors, customers, and end-users.

In small groups with mentors and other companies in the cohort, each team will describe their business model, and receive feedback from the mentors

ROLE REQUIREMENTS
We are looking for volunteers within the Moody's that can offer insight into the process of developing and explaining a business model to understand its strengths and areas of opportunity.
Interest and expertise in the ecosystem restoration space- specifically around deforestation, land degradation, water scarcity, loss of biodiversity, and adverse climate change.
Work experience in least one sub-Saharan African country and or knowledge of the ecosystem.
Have a level of business acumen to be able to provide valuable insights regarding the subject matter.

BEFORE THE SESSION:
-Volunteers will receive a calendar invitation and a Mentor Prep including information about the session and the companies.
-The session will be held in English.

** Volunteers are welcome to participate in one or more program events.

MARKET MAPPING is a virtual session where mentors come in to provide feedback on whether entrepreneurs have correctly analysed their market size and strategies to capture their market.

SUMMARY
You’ll be required to read about the companies in the cohort in advance. Each mentor will be in a small
group with their assigned companies. Entrepreneurs will then be required to present their market sizing and analysis, and strategies of how to operate and add value within their market. The goal of this session is for teams to receive feedback around their market sizing and analysis, and strategies of how to operate and add value within their market.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS
We are looking for volunteers within Moody's that can offer insight into mapping a market opportunity process (TAM, SAM, SOM) and an understanding of what realistic objectives look like in terms of expansion and consolidation.
Interest and expertise in the ecosystem restoration space- specifically around deforestation, land degradation, water scarcity, loss of biodiversity, and adverse climate change.
Work experience in least one sub-Saharan African country and or knowledge of the ecosystem.
