When refugees arrive in the United States, something that is often dearly missed is access to produce that was readily available in their home country but not in the United States. International Rescue Committee’s New Roots program is one where our refugee clients are provided small plots of land, free of charge, that our clients can use to grow their own produce. Clients can grow produce for their own consumption or to sell at local farmers’ markets, which provides an additional economic opportunity, and IRC will provide training for small business enterprise creation in their new country. Urban agriculture also presents an excellent opportunity for socialization, especially for seniors, and can be beneficial in mitigating culture shock and the trauma of relocating to a new country. At Horseneck Farm (26826 86th Ave S, Kent, WA 98030), IRC has a large plot of land that needs some upkeep: weeding, removing blackberries, clearing brush along an irrigation line, and several other gardening/urban agriculture related tasks. This is a great opportunity for a large group!
Make sure to wear gear that you are comfortable wearing outside and that you don’t mind getting dirty. If you have gardening gloves, please bring them (we will have limited supplies on hand). Please also make sure to bring water, especially if it is warm.

Join a community tree planting event and help beautify Las Cruces, reduce the impacts of extreme heat, and celebrate the launch of the Doña Ana Soil and Water Conservation District NeighborWoods program (DASWCD NeighborWoods), which will be bringing 2,000 trees to urban areas of Doña Ana County!DASWCD NeighborWoods is especially designed to protect residents of Doña Ana County from the harmful health effects of extreme heat, which are intensified in urban areas by heat-absorbing surfaces and lack of shade. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), urban heat islands experience higher temperatures due to buildings and roads absorbing and re-emitting more solar heat than natural landscapes. Trees help lower surface and air temperatures through shade and evapotranspiration, potentially reducing temperatures by 20–45°F in shaded areas.
At this community tree planting event, volunteers will work in small groups, guided by experienced team leaders, to plant trees in pre-dug holes in an urban neighborhood along S. Solano Dr. in Las Cruces.

Friends of Gateway Green is looking to expand and diversify its Board of Directors. The organization, founded in 2009, has no paid employees, so it has a working board. There have been as many as nine board members, but there are only five at this time. As we add board members, we are looking to increase the diversity (ethnic, gender, language, skill set). Relative to skill sets, we would love to add one or more of the following to the mix -- legal, accounting, public health, environmental restoration/management, or grant writing.
